Why the Army's new advertisement is the best
Does politicizing the US Army help accomplish its mission?
GoArmy's new advertisement released on their Youtube page celebrates diversity and women by telling the animated story of a young girl pushing through her teen life to become a capable Army soldier who operates a patriot missile defense system.
A story that successfully captures the values of modern America, prioritizing vice over virtue; selfish indulgence over selfless service, and subjective truth over objective fact.
It gives a peek into the life of a child, raised by homosexual females, who desires to prove herself as a contributing member of American society. She joins the Army to pursue a personal goal of proving her inner strength and maybe shattering some stereotypes along the way.
How does this narrative serve our nation, let alone our military?
What will she do when the military's mission of defending freedom and American interests conflict with her own? Does she have the mental and physical fortitude to withstand this nation's enemies?
I suppose for her to answer those questions, she would need to acknowledge that the Army has a mission. One mission. That mission is "to deploy, fight, and win our Nation's wars by providing ready, prompt, and sustained land dominance by Army forces across the full spectrum of conflict as part of the Joint Force." Based on the reasons she gave for joining toward the end of the video, I doubt she joined to uphold the Army's mission.
What does this video convey to foreign enemies of the United States?
There are many foreign threats, countries, and nations that wish to see America and the freedom-loving values it still promotes incinerated. The American way of life is constantly under potential attack.
No one claims that America is free of sin--no country can claim that. But what this country can claim is that it has fought harder for freedom and justice than any country in the world. It has taken extreme steps to promote equality among race, gender, and creed that no other country can even come close to rivaling.
The United States Army is known for its military prowess and success. It is an entity that moves hard and fast to neutralize the enemies of freedom with lethal force. It accomplishes this by displaying its tenacious strength and training its soldiers to be the best at their respective military operational specialties. The Army has seemingly not had room for political narratives unless forced upon by political campaigns outside its control until now.
A key factor in maintaining the Army image in the minds of the American people and foreign entities is military propaganda, which the above video is classified as. The usual idea of the Army is that of utmost strength, courage, and willingness to succeed.
Now, dear reader, ask yourself this question: Does the video above exude strength?
Then examine this Russian military propaganda video and compare it to the new American one.
Which of the two videos instill the idea of strength in your mind? Which Army would you be nervous to go up against?
Pit the hunk of lethality pictured in the Russian ad against the sweet, innocent girl from the American video and who do you see walking away with bloody hands?
Why is the American Army promoting this new image of themselves in an effort to cater to a political narrative? What is the point or purpose behind it? How does it benefit the Army?
I think it has to do with an attempt at appealing to the newest generation that is inundated daily by virtue-signaling media and social justice campaigns. What they have failed to consider is that the type of person willing to join the Army and lay down their life for their country does not care about intruding on individual sensitivities. They are strong, independent thinkers, and wish to submit their strength to the service of something bigger than themselves. They want the life of a warrior. They want to take out the enemies of freedom head-on. They want to defend others, not just serve their own interests.
We need media that reflects this nation's strength and tenacious resolve to protect and uphold what we have: freedom. Our military needs to promote narratives that help further its mission, image, and goal. The enemy does not need to relate to our soldiers, they need to fear them. The American people do not need an insight into the personal life of one of the Army's soldiers, but instead to see the powerful work the Army is doing and is capable of doing with their voluntary support, enlistment, and contribution.
If the Army's mission is changing to reflect that of our culture and display how cute and relatable our soldiers are, then this new ad is the best one for that purpose. However, if the Army wishes to continue to exude military power, appealing to political agendas is not going to help them. It will instead weaken the resolve of our soldiers and have the enemies of America laughing at us as they prepare their next assault.
