Structured Insulated Panels or SIPs are powerful panels of insulation that are used in the construction of walls, ceilings, and floors for houses. The panels have a combination of several layers for resisting the transfer of heat. The panels are very durable and possess more energy and strength than what traditional methods offer. Insulated panels are made using an insulated foam core that is covered on both sides using a steel skin that is joined by an adhesive. Steel gives strength and makes sure that insulation is sealed and secure. The foam core of the structure prevents heat from transferring through the panel. This is why refrigeration facilities have insulated panels for keeping the items in them cold.

Types of Insulation Panels

There are mainly 3 types of insulation panels. These are:

Expanded Polystyrene SIPs: Expanded insulation consists of a foam board and they enjoy a lot of preference when it comes to the manufacture of insulation panels. The expansion of a small bead of polystyrene with steam is involved in this type of closed-cell insulation. During the process, convert into large blocks of insulation that have a range of densities that eventually get cut into the required shapes and sizes. The usual width of these panels ranges between 4 to 24 feet.

Polyurethane Insulated Panels: Another name for polyurethane panels is polyisocyanurate. Insulated panels possess a value of around R-6 to R-7 with every inch’s worth of increase in thickness. The usual thickness of these panels is 3.5 inches for walls. For ceilings, the thickness is 7.5 inches. These panels are a little more expensive than expanded polystyrene panels but they offer greater resistance to fire and water and a higher R-value.

Compressed Straw-Core Insulated Panels: These panels are also called ‘green-building materials’ and they are manufactured with renewable and recycled waste agricultural straw. They may be environmental-friendly but the R-value they offer is somewhat lower than the other insulators.

Insulation Panels in Cool Rooms

Cool rooms can make or break the efficiency of a company. They are instrumental in keeping perishable items fresh. These items include vegetables, fruits, and other items such as chemicals and medicines. Cold rooms can be useful and some of the factors that are synonymous with cool rooms are:

Air Leakage: As already has been said, the company can function as long as its cold rooms are in proper shape and are maintained consistently. The true potency of a cold room can only be seen if it can be closed for longer periods. If they are not closed then the temperature cannot be lowered. This leakage of air takes when the doors of the cold room are opened. Now it is important for the people in charge of taking care of the cold rooms to get into the cold rooms now and then. This requires opening the rooms but keeping the rooms open for extended periods can be detrimental. Warm air can damage the condition of the items that are in the cold room. Leakage of air has to be prevented at all costs.

Moisture: Mould is a common occurrence in perishable items and cold rooms in general. Cold rooms are cold, and in winter, when the room temperature is cold, the temperature of the same can get even colder which can be bad for the stock inside the same. Too much of anything is bad and the additional drop in temperature can give rise to water droplets and a further drop in the temperature, ice and frost can arise. Condensation can lead to the formation of moisture in the ceilings of the cold room and lead to the growth of mould. To prevent the occurrence of mould, the interiors of the cold room like the ceilings are therefore insulated. The insulation doesn’t allow the passage of moisture.

Easy Transportation: Mobile coolrooms are invaluable in the perishable goods industry. Businesses often need to transport their stock across huge distances, and perishable products do not stand a chance of surviving the journey. Mobile coolrooms, with their sub-zero temperatures, can keep the items in good condition throughout the duration of the journey.

Basics of a Cold Room

A range of items can be kept in a cold room such as medicines, chemicals, fruits, vegetables, and more. A mobile coolroom will help in the transportation and/or delivery of these delicate items from one place to another without any damage to their quality. Online grocery services can be an example of this. The elements that constitute a cold room are as follows:

Interlocking Freeze Walls: These walls inside a cold room act as thermal panels whose purpose is the elimination of potential loopholes in the structure.

Flooring: Flooring is done for the prevention of the transfer of heat from the surface of the floor. The flooring has been improved with double insulation.

Roofing: This is a delicate area that has to be protected from the transfer of heat as the roofing will be exposed to sunlight. Double insulation can work wonders on roofing.

Conclusion

Insulated panels give a lot of stability and strength to cold rooms. The modern ones can prevent bacteria and dust. The minimum R-value should be at least 40 and the thermal efficiency of the same has to be high.
