Indian Navy Day 2021: Know When Indian Navy Established?

From Jung-e-Azadi, Operation Taj in Mumbai to many other cases, the history of the Indian Navy is full of heroic feats. The Navy is the maritime arm of the Indian Army, which was established in 1612. The East India Company formed an army in the form of the East India Company Marines to protect its ships, which was later renamed the Royal Indian Navy.

History of Indian Navy Day

The Navy was re-formed in 1950 after India’s independence and was named Indian Navy. The world’s fifth largest navy had heavily bombed Pakistan’s Karachi port in the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War and destroyed it. Navy Day is celebrated every year on 4 December because of the success of the operation which was launched on 4 December 1971 named Operation Trident.

Ghazi Attack of 1971

During the liberation of Bangladesh, only the three armies of India had displayed amazing bravery in the 1971 war. The Navy, moving in the sea area, destroyed Pakistan’s Karachi port by bombing and during this Pakistan’s PNS Ghazi submarine was buried in the water. INS Vikrant won a lot of accolades in the campaign. This success of the Navy played an important role in India’s victory in the liberation war. The Navy had displayed bravery not only in 1971 but also in the 1965 war.

Although the history of the Navy is believed to be from mythological times, but during the British colonization it got a real form in the form of army under the name Royal Indian Navy. The name of the Royal Indian Navy was changed to Indian Navy on 26 January 1950. The Navy not only protected independence, but also played an important role in achieving independence.

Azad Hind Fauj || Jung-e-Azadi

Important role in Jung-e-Azadi: Inspired by the armed struggle waged by the Azad Hind Fauj of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, Indian members of the Royal Indian Navy declared Jung-e-Azadi on 18 February 1946 from a ship named HIMS Talwar. This naval rebellion was so intense that it soon spread to 78 ships and 20 shores and 20,000 sailors were involved in it.

He sang freedom songs over loudspeakers and had violent encounters with white marines at many places. Although this revolt of the naval could not be successful due to lack of support from the Indian leaders, but the fear definitely instilled in the hearts of the British that now it is better for them to run away from India.

Indian Navy Freed Goa from Portuguese Rule

Expelled the Portuguese from Goa: Not only this, in 1961, this force also played an important role in driving out the Portuguese from Goa and carried out Operation Vijay. Presently, the Indian Navy is the fifth largest Navy in the world, with over 155 ships including the aircraft carrier INS Viraat and over 2,000 Marine Commandos.

The Marcos commandos of the Indian Navy are among the best in the world, who played an important role in collaboration with the NSG commandos to bring the terrorists who had entered Hotel Taj in Mumbai to death. The Marcos commandos carried out Operation Cactus in 1988 in a hijacked ship in Indian waters, saving the lives of many hostages including the then Education Minister of Maldives. Marcos has been thwarting infiltration of terrorists through waterways in Jhelum river and Wular in Jammu and Kashmir.

Why Navy Day is on 4th December

Navy Day is celebrated to remember the strength and bravery of the Indian Navy which won the Indo-Pakistani War in 1971. On December 4, 1971, the Indian Navy attacked the Karachi naval base in Pakistan under ‘Operation Trident’. Keeping in mind the success of this operation, Navy Day is celebrated every year on 4th December.
