Operation Hangover: 8 Foods That Are Worth More Than an Aspirin
If you overdid it last night, this is what you should be looking for in your fridge.
Headache, nausea, fatigue, bad mood? If you drank too much last night, you might be suffering from what is popularly known as a "hangover," or what scientists call "veisalgia" (from the Norwegian keys, something like "restlessness after excessiveness," with the Greek ending algia, meaning "pain"). The usual thing, the next day, is to search the fridge desperately and kitchen cupboards in search of something – be it solid, liquid, animal, or vegetable – that will alleviate our discomfort. Are there foods that can help us in this distressing situation? The answer is yes.
No wonder we are so exhausted. According to a study by the University of California, San Francisco (USA), excessive consumption of alcohol causes dehydration, causes hormonal changes, and disad just cytokines (proteins responsible for intercellular communication), not to mention the toxic effects of alcohol on the blood. Knowing the damage, we know what needs to be repaired. It is proven that certain foods can relieve our agony due to their content of vitamins, minerals, amino acids, or sugars. The best ones, in this case, are those that don't give the liver a lot of work (the poor thing is already overloaded). Deep-fried foods and stews are best left for another day.
The best hangover foods
Milk
Let's start with an instant "cure": a glass of milk. It might damage your partying reputation, but no one needs to know. "It is rich in calcium and usually relieves gastritis caused by alcohol. It also contains cysteine, an amino acid that digests the acetaldehyde produced when the body tries to process ingested alcohol," says nutritionist Izaskun Arrarás de María from the Official College of Dietitians-Nutritionists of Navarra ( Corinna ). Natural yogurt will also do. "It's rich in vitamin B5," she adds. Of course, any help from vitamins and minerals is welcome in these cases.
asparagus
Give that sad bottle forgotten at the bottom of the pantry a chance. Asparagus, what a simple delicacy! Tasty, nutritious, and stubborn enemy of alcoholic malaise. A study by Jeju National University (South Korea) concluded that the amino acids and minerals in asparagus could relieve hangovers and protect liver cells against toxins. This skinny sprout also has antifungal, diuretic, and anti-inflammatory properties.
bacon sandwich
All ready for nightfall? Hairspray, new clothes, perfume, aspirin… Bacon? You don't need to take it, but try to have a stock in the fridge: it will be of great help for the dreaded morning. The classic bacon sandwich, warm and juicy, is a good ally against a hangover, according to a study by the University of Newcastle (United Kingdom): bread is rich in carbohydrates, and bacon contributes proteins, which are broken down into amino acids and make us feel better.
Banana
Potassium source. Why is he so needed? "Alcohol dehydrates us, as it inhibits a hormone responsible for the reserve of liquids in our body," explains Moisés Robledo, family doctor and information secretary for the Spanish Society of General and Family Doctors (SEMG). Thus, alcohol reduces the amount of potassium in the blood, which can be replaced with this delicious fruit – rich, also, in vitamin B6.
Tomato juice
The typical Bloody Mary (vodka cocktail and tomato juice) the next day is justified… If we take the alcohol out. The fruit juice (rich in simple sugars) fights hypoglycemia (a reduction in the average level of glucose in the blood) caused by a hangover, helps to hydrate us, and contains lycopene, a component with multiple benefits (such as being anti-inflammatory). So it makes sense to suppress vodka. "We cannot fight a waste problem in the body by generating more waste," says Moisés Robledo.
Eggs
It's about time for a good egg breakfast, no? Well, today is the day. Among their many benefits is that they are packed with B vitamins: B2, B6, B12… B6, in particular, plays an essential role in our recovery, according to the University of California study. And, to top it off, they are rich in cysteine, an amino acid that is effective against toxins.
Tuna
"It's rich in alpha-ketoglutarate, an enzyme that can also help minimize hangover symptoms," explains nutritionist Izaskun. It is a vasodilator, favors the correct blood irrigation of the tissues, provides oxygen, and eliminates toxins. So if you don't have a steak on hand, settle for a can. Another good fish to better weather the storm is salmon, an excellent source of B vitamins.
Orange juice
We are dehydrated, so the more fluid we drink, the better. Make an effort to move, cut some oranges and turn on the juicer: the juice will flow very well. If you eat breakfast outside, order it at the bakery. "Because of its high content in vitamin C and fructose, it helps the liver to metabolize alcohol," says the nutritionist.
