Hoopoes- Messenger Bird of Prophet Suleiman

Hazrat Suleiman(AS)

Prophet Suleiman (Solomon) was the son of Prophet Daud(AS). He was a great king of all times and ruled over present Syria and Palestine. Allah has given him particular kingship that no one had ever. According to the Quran Allah has and wind, jinn and animals subservient to Him. He had the control and ability to talk to all animals and jinns; this was a unique quality. Prophet(AS) used the power of these creators to perform extraordinary tasks. Moreover, He travelled mile of distance in minutes by air. Quran narrates a few of his stories from this beautiful and only imaginable life for us.

Hoopoes- Messenger Bird Of Prophet Suleiman(AS)

Hud hud is an Arabic word which means “Hoopoes” bird. It is a unique bird as the Quran narrates its story. By reading the text of the Quran, one concludes that this bird has extraordinary qualities. Allah has blessed Hazrat Suleiman(AS) with this exceptional quality that He can understand bird and included it in his army to work for Allah sake. Astonishing is that this bird that it travelled miles. And brought news from remote areas and keep an eye that where is Allah name or not. Quran beautifully narrates its communication with Suleiman(AS), where it performed a duty to spread Allah’s message.

Communication of Prophet Suleiman(AS) and Hoopoe:

Once Hazrat Soloman(AS) was conducting a usual meeting for getting reports from creators in His control, He found that Hoopoe, one of his army was missing. He said to all:

He (Suleiman) inspected the birds, and said: “What is the matter that I see not the hoopoe? Or is he among the absentees? I will certainly punish him with a severe punishment or slaughter him unless he brings me explicit authorisation.

(Quran 27:20-21)

Hoopoe appear at that moment and said:

It was not long before the bird arrived and said, “I have found out something you don’t know. I have just come to you from Shaba with sure news.

(Quran 27:22)

I found a lady ruling over them, and she has been given all things that could be owned by any ruler of the earth, and she has a magnificent throne.

(Quran 27:23)

I found her and her people worshipping the sun rather Allah, and Shatan has made their acts fair-seeming to them and has barred them from (Allah’s) Way, so they have no guidance,”

(Quran 27:24)

After explaining the situatio of Queen sabaa hud hud glorify Allah as:

Should they not worship God, who returns forth what is hidden in the heavens and earth and knows both what you people hide and what you declare?

Allah – there is no god except Him, Lord of the Great Throne.”

(Quran 27:26-27)

Prophet Suleiman(AS) said after hearing all from hoopoe:

We shall see whether you are telling the truth or lying. Go with this letter of mine and deliver it to them, then stand aside and see how they will respond.

(Quran 27:27-28)

The Queen of Sheba said

Counsellors, a gracious letter has been delivered to me. It is from Suleiman, and it reads: ‘In the Name of Allah—the Most Compassionate, Most Merciful.

(Quran 27:29-30)

Quran narrates story of hoopoe just upto this.

Qualities of hoopoe

After reading this, one can conclude that bird too has intelligence, keen observation and sense of responsibility. Soloman (AS) communicate it in his language. Today even in such advanced era, no one can imagine of understanding bird language. Hud hud was an intelligent, responsible, obedient and most importantly, the faithful servant of Allah. Such a lovable duty it performed that Allah adds it in the Quran, a right path to be followed till hereafter.

Message from Hoopoe story

Like hud hud, we must use our abilities to perform Allah’s task.

We must be dutiful and obedient to our Lord.

And never think that birds are weak or worthless, story proof how big tasks they can perform.

Point to Ponder

If birds have such keen observation, then definitely they are noticing us too. What they will be thinking about us when we disobey our AllahMoreover, they will also be able to be our witnesses for good or bad deeds. So, we must be careful.
