3 Wine Estates You Must Visit

When in Stellenbosch, South Africa

Stellenbosch is my favourite destination to travel to, I’ve been there four times now and the village next to Cape Town never bores me. One of the main reasons is the unique wine culture. The wine estates are all extremely beautiful in their own way, easily accessible and the first question you’ll get when arriving is “are you joining us for a tasting?”

There are so many wine estates in the Stellenbosch area, so it’s easy to get lost in all the options available. That’s why I pointed out my absolute three favourite wine estates for you.

Spier

One of my favourite things to do is have a picnic by the Spier estate lake. Spier is a mini village with white buildings, a great restaurant and it’s also possible to sleep in the hotel situated on the estate. You could easily stay there a whole week and not get bored but if you only want to spend a couple of hours at Spier their picnic is perfect. In the small shop on the estate, you can compose your own picnic, Spier provides the baskets, blankets, and wine glasses. I can definitely recommend their homemade pesto on their freshly baked bread. If you cannot decide on the wine, the Chenin Blanc is a South African grape so I would try their Signature bottle. Choose your own spot by the lake under the trees and you are all set for a fantastic picnic.

Cavalli Wine & Co

If you like wine, architecture, horses, mountains, and art, look no further because you’ll be in heaven at Cavalli Wine & Co. When you arrive, you should go to the below ground level first and get blown away by the local art exhibition in the most beautiful and light gallery space. After this you can find yourself a spot by the lake or at the terrace with the most amazing lake and mountain view, overviewing the vineyards and the many horses.

Peter Falke Wines

Most of the wine estates close their doors at 5 pm, but not at Peter Falke Wines. You can enjoy a ‘Sundowner’ (a typical South African word that speaks for itself) until at least 7 pm on their beautiful terrace in the garden. If you are a little snack before dinner, don’t try their nacho’s because you won’t be hungry anymore. When you already bought to many wines to take home you can visit The Little Store at Peter Falke and get yourself some real Falke socks.

I could go on and on about how great the wine estates are in the Stellenbosch area. But you should see it your yourself at the above vineyards.

Cheers!
