Top Five Underrated LGBT Songs

Many and all that are part of the LGBT campaigns, rights and communities across the globe should and will always be respected, this time more than ever during these dark and difficult times of racism, political manoeuvres, government difficulties and of course during the pandemic.

I do not class myself as political, but will always be respectful to those of different backgrounds, agender, race, religions and of course different sexualities. We are all human beings with different views, opinions and beliefs and we should all learn to respect and love one another regardless if there are those of gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender or even pansexual. But what the pride of LGBT really needs for more support and dignity along with honour is music, however music is mainly dominated of pop culture and chart dominating.

But some and very few songs do not get the recognition they deserve when relating to these terms and campaigns and communities of LGBT such as these five below. These songs are not or very rarely heard on the radio, viewed little often on YouTube or even heard about by the artists either popular globally or nationally. But perhaps they could really hit the mark and gain the attention it deserves for the pride of all and these songs, either from gay artists or those in great support of the LGBT campaigns can make people realise and understand that these top five underrated tracks have a unique message to give out to those who have not come across before to be able to respect and care of those with different sexualities.

#5: He Likes Boys - Simone Battle

This song by the late Simone Battle and released only as a single, is basically a scenario of "Girl meets boy, Boy meets boy, girl and boy become besties" but is also of her having a huge crush on a guy she has liked for sometime only to realise that he is into boys but she still loves him regardless and supports his choice of his sexuality. This song is also uncharted but delivers a message of how others should support and understand whether they have friends they have had a crush on for a long while in secret and be happy for what their sexualities really are.

#4: Strangers - Halsey (feat. Lauren Jauregui)

Featured on the album Hopeless Fountain Kingdom, this song written and performed by Halsey alongside Lauren Jauregui who are both openly bisexual, is about two women (supposedly either lesbian or bisexual) longing for each other however. But the lyrics however, tell a straight forward story of a dissolved relationship that disintegrated a long while ago and the lyrics reveal the long loneliness that follows after. The music video has a rather different context to the song, as it details a boxing match between the two artists with such unique passion, even the two bloodied and battered and to which Halsey takes a beating from Lauren, until Halsey emerges victorious at the end.

#3: Troye Sivan - Lucky Strike

From his second studio album Bloom and a personal favourite of mine along with some of his tracks, this song delivers a rather catchy tune, is full of queer desire and for sure about the feeling of summertime infatuation. The song reflects the feels of summer love in the likes of California time on the beach and the lyrics add to clear romance of a boy attracted to another boy desperate to make love to him. In the music video, he is sitting alone with a cooler on the beach (presumably in California as related to the lyrics) and is automatically attracted to lusting for a male muscular tattooed bartender. The singer then gathers his confidence and orders at the bar to try and gain his attention, which works out and his potential beau of his ideal man seductively stirs up a cocktail for him. After their bar little bar affair, Troye Sivan follows his new crush into the ocean, and the two drift through the sparkling red water on a rather romantic boat adventure.

Even though his music is underrated and not fully recognised in other countries, overall Troye Sivan continues to pioneer as a gay icon and his unwillingness to obscure his sexuality in his music heralds a new textural thrill and continues to raise awareness of the LGBT communities across the globe with his music and him being himself as an artist.

#2: Sam Smith - HIM

One of the most popular and recognised artists across the globe and of all LGBT campaigns even classing himself as a feminist, Sam Smith delivers a unique and flawless track and a standout song from their album The Thrill Of It All. On this track Smith recounts a story of an imagined boy from Mississippi coming out to his father and the Catholic singer also incorporates the conflict between his sexuality and his religious upbringing, it is also a narrative story of a song that is meant to convey a specific aspect of the gay experience of others and written personally for the LGBT community.

#1: Hayley Kiyoko - Girls Like Girls

A rather popular and casual song, however the concept of the track is based around writing about subjects that may not be in the spotlight yet became a universal video that brings out different kinds of emotions for different kinds of people who ever they are or what there sexualities really are. Although released as a single, Girls Like Girls by the artist Hayley Kiyoko has written the song based on an idea of how all young boy’s steal other boys’ girls. But Kiyoko wanted to bring an idea of a girl stealing another guy's girl but with bringing up a fight for her love to protect her. While the track maintained Hayley Kiyoko's synth-pop rhythm sound that fans had come to expect, the song’s lyrics delved into her queer identity with such brazen confidence that had remained unseen on her previous tracks. The lyrics operate as a statement to a man that she’s out to steal his girlfriend from him.

In the music video, it follows a storyline of two female friends extending their friendship upon realising their love for each other. One of the females are seen looking sad as she has cuts on her face whilst cycling, the cuts on her face are from her boyfriend who often treats her with verbal abuse, especially after he catches the two friends almost kissing by the pool. On another day, the two females are sat by the pool and try to kiss again unable to contain their feelings for each other, until the boyfriend assaults them both and rages at his girlfriends face for doing so. Suddenly her friend jumps on him lashing out and punching him until her friend manages to tear her off of him. The two girls finally kiss, and the video concludes with them both cycling along happily, as the music video would give and tell a rather powerful storyline of gay love.

Hayley Kiyoko is often described by her fans as a Lesbian Jesus and continues to inspire, fight and support for the LGBT rights and campaigns worldwide.
