Wiaan Mulder’s 367: A Historic Innings That Fell Just Short of Immortality
On the second day of the second Test match between Zimbabwe and South Africa, as the players headed for the lunch break, it seemed that one of cricket’s greatest and most iconic records was on the verge of being broken. Fans worldwide held their breath in anticipation that Monday could mark the day when new history would be written in the sport’s record books. But fate had other plans. South Africa’s stand-in captain, Wiaan Mulder, was unbeaten on a monumental score of 367 runs at the lunch interval. After losing the toss earlier, South Africa had been invited to bat first by Zimbabwe. Mulder, stepping in at the critical number three position, had embraced this invitation with open arms, putting on a batting masterclass that would be spoken of for years to come. During his innings, Mulder struck an impressive 49 fours and 4 sixes, dominating the Zimbabwean bowlers with an array of elegant strokes, powerful drives, and precise shot selection. His triple century, which came off just 297 balls, was recorded as the second-fastest triple century in the history of Test cricket, an achievement only a handful of cricketers have ever approached. As the lunch break approached, fans and cricket pundits alike were buzzing with excitement. Many hoped that immediately after lunch, Mulder would continue his majestic form and surpass the legendary Brian Lara's record of 400 not out, the highest individual score in Test cricket history. Lara’s record, achieved against England in 2004 at Antigua, had stood unchallenged for over two decades, a testament to his greatness and the enormity of the feat. However, in a surprising and somewhat bewildering turn of events, the South African skipper made a decision that left fans stunned. Before the lunch break concluded, Mulder declared the innings, ending South Africa's first innings at an imposing 626 for 5 wickets. This abrupt declaration meant that Mulder walked off the field unbeaten on 367, just 33 runs short of the magical 400-mark. The decision sparked immediate reactions across the cricketing world. Many found it baffling; why would a captain declare when he was so close to rewriting cricketing history? Mulder, now the second South African cricketer to score a Test triple century, would forever be remembered not only for his incredible batting display but also as the player who fell tantalizingly short of eclipsing Lara’s legendary record. --- Expanded Analysis: The Weight of a Cricketing Record: To understand the gravity of Mulder’s decision, one must appreciate the significance of Brian Lara’s 400 not out. Set in 2004, it remains the highest individual score in Test cricket. The next closest competitor is Matthew Hayden, whose 380 against Zimbabwe in 2003 briefly held the record before Lara reclaimed it. Only a handful of cricketers have ever reached 350 in a Test match, and breaking the 400-run barrier is a feat almost mythical in its difficulty. Records in cricket are not just numbers; they are milestones that define careers and inspire generations. Lara’s 400 was a statement of batting dominance, endurance, and technical mastery. For Mulder to come so close to this number and then declare voluntarily is almost unheard of in cricket’s rich tapestry of legendary innings. Who is Wiaan Mulder? Wiaan Mulder, a talented all-rounder, has been on the fringes of South African cricket for several years. Known primarily for his bowling skills and lower-order batting, few expected him to play such a monumental innings, especially while acting as a stand-in captain. This match, therefore, marked a career-defining moment for Mulder—a transformation from an all-rounder into a batting colossus, if only for this Test. Mulder’s temperament throughout the innings showcased maturity beyond his years. His shot selection was measured, his technique solid, and his ability to switch gears when needed spoke volumes about his growth as a cricketer. Why Declare? Possible Reasons Behind the Decision The question on everyone’s mind remains: why would Mulder declare when within touching distance of a world record? Several possible factors could have influenced his decision: 1. Team Before Self: Cricket, especially Test cricket, is a team game. South Africa may have wanted to give themselves enough time to bowl Zimbabwe out twice and secure a win. The weather forecast, pitch conditions, and match situation might have influenced this call. 2. Respect for Opponents: Sometimes, captains choose not to prolong the suffering of their opponents. Zimbabwe's bowling attack had been thoroughly demoralized, and continuing might have been seen as unsporting in some circles. 3. Leadership Responsibility: As stand-in captain, Mulder may have felt it inappropriate to pursue personal glory at the expense of his team’s chances of victory. Declarations are a captain's responsibility, and perhaps he prioritized the match result over an individual milestone. 4. External Factors: Time constraints, potential rain delays, or even team management’s advice from the dressing room could have played a role in prompting the declaration. Whatever the reason, Mulder's choice reflects the difficult balancing act captains face between personal achievements and team priorities. Reactions from the Cricketing World Social media exploded with reactions as soon as the news of the declaration spread. Many cricket legends, commentators, and fans expressed both admiration for Mulder's selflessness and frustration at being denied the spectacle of a new world record. Fans’ Disappointment: For many fans, cricket is as much about moments of individual brilliance as team victories. The anticipation of witnessing a new world record had captured global attention. Cricketing Ethics: Others praised Mulder for upholding the spirit of cricket, placing the team first, and showing humility in the face of personal glory. Comparisons to Past Declarations: Historically, few captains have declared when on the brink of a major record. Perhaps the most famous instance of a declaration depriving a player of a milestone was when Don Bradman was left stranded on 299 not out due to a declaration in 1932, though the circumstances there were different. A Legacy of 367 Not Out Regardless of the record, Mulder’s 367 not out cements his place in cricketing history. It is among the highest scores in Test cricket and makes him only the second South African to achieve a triple century, following Hashim Amla’s 311 not out against England in 2012. His innings displayed every quality that defines great batsmanship: patience, aggression when needed, tactical awareness, and the ability to adapt to different bowlers and conditions. Zimbabwe’s bowlers tried everything—pace, spin, short balls, full deliveries—but nothing could dislodge the resolute Mulder. The Context of South Africa vs Zimbabwe While Zimbabwe is not considered among the strongest Test-playing nations, their bowling attack has often been gritty and disciplined. Facing them at home or abroad requires patience and concentration. Mulder’s innings, while dominant, should not be dismissed because of the opposition’s relative inexperience compared to cricketing powerhouses like India, Australia, or England. Every Test triple century is a monumental achievement, regardless of the opposition. What Could Have Been: The 400-Mark Had Mulder chosen to continue, there is little doubt he was capable of surpassing 400. He was scoring fluently, showing no signs of fatigue, and Zimbabwe’s bowlers were struggling to contain him. With 367 already on the board, another 33 runs could have taken as little as 5 to 10 overs at his current scoring rate. If he had reached 400, Mulder would have joined an elite club of cricketers who changed the record books forever, his name immortalized alongside Lara's. The missed opportunity will likely fuel debates for years. --- Final Thoughts: A Heroic Yet Humble Performance In the end, Wiaan Mulder's innings will be remembered not only for the runs scored but also for the decision not to chase personal records at the expense of the team's objectives. Cricket fans will debate whether this was the right call, but few will question the character Mulder displayed. This innings, and the declaration that followed, tell a story bigger than numbers: a tale of leadership, humility, and the eternal tension between individual ambition and collective responsibility. Whether history views it as a missed chance or a mark of true captaincy will depend on the final result of the match and South Africa’s long-term cricketing legacy. But for now, Wiaan Mulder stands tall—not just as a batsman who could have broken a record, but as a captain who chose his team’s quest for victory over his own place in history.

She Hated LGBTQ People—So We Flooded Her Bakery with Pride Cakes. AI-Generated.
My sibling worked with a woman who made their life miserable. Let’s call her Diane. She worked as the only cake decorator at a small-town grocery store—not a big box chain, but one of those local places where everyone knows everyone. From the outside, the store seemed friendly, warm, even community-focused. But behind the bakery counter? Hatred quietly simmered under a layer of fondant and fake smiles.

Good Vibes at Northwest Arkansas Pride 2025
Greetings, Vocal readers and subscribers! This past weekend was eventful and filled with unity. As Pride Month comes to a close, the fight for our equal rights is far from over. Regardless of who's in the White House, we won't rest until everyone has access to the necessary accommodations, such as respectful and proper health care. We have to fight the good fight daily, not just during Pride Month. Also, we won't let a bigoted President and his cohorts devalue and dehumanizing us. We exist and here to stay. As I've stated in my previous stories, equality has always existed. No one is "forcing " it on you or anyone else. Being a decent human being and showing compassion who are different from you isn't optional. It's neither indoctrination, nor controversial. It's also neither a Democrat or Republican thing. It's both a common sense and humanity thing. No group of people should feel unsafe or be discriminated against, just because of who someone is or what they look like. Conservatives tend to call people like us who care about other causes and people's plights woke. Yes. Yes, we are. You know why? It's because I said before, no one deserves to be mistreated in any way, because of one's race, gender, or sexual orientation. We don't want people to lose their lives or suffer due to these Republican politicians and lawmakers having these oppressive laws that harms others. So yes, Republicans. We are woke and yes, we give a damn about those who can't stand up or defend themselves. We refuse to shut up or walk on eggshells in order for us to make you feel comfortable. Our voices will only grow louder and bigger. If we stay silent, then the bullies would win. When I say bullies, I'm referring to conservatives and conservative politicians.

Celebrating 10 Years of Marriage Equality . Top Story - June 2025.
Where were you and what were you doing on June 26, 2015? For me, it was just another day at the office. So why did I bring up this date, you ask? Because today is the 10-year anniversary of marriage equality becoming the law of the land in all 50 states. The United States became the 21st country to legalize same-sex marriage nationwide. It was a huge victory for the us, the LGBTQ+ community, activists, and same-sex couples themselves. Two other groundbreaking rulings also happened on this day: Propositional 8 and the repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). Propositional 8, also known as Prop 8, was a California ballot proposition that passed in November 2008, which previously prohibited Californian same-sex couples from marrying. In 2010, it was ruled unconstitutional and didn't go into effect until 2013. The Defense of Marriage Act, or DOMA, was a law that was passed and signed by then President Bill Clinton in 1996. It previously prevented the government from recognizing gay and lesbian couples. However, it was later struck down, specifically Section 3 (1 U.S.C. § 7).

The Best Ways You Can Support Your Asexual Friends
When I first came out as asexual to my friends, it was...awkward to say the least. One said to me, "I've never met one of those before." Another looked at me in shock that someone out there could have no interest in sex. With each friend I told, I got bombarded with more and more questions, like I was a space alien waiting for the mothership to bring me back to my home planet. Believe me, times like that, I wish I were.

The Last Spell in the Margins
The house at the end of Holy Cross Road looked like it had let out its final breath. The rooftop sagged slightly, and the shutters leaned off-kilter toward the soil. Even the fence, once pristine white, was now yellowed and peeling. Inside, the family picked through the remains of Eliza Bankop’s estate with hazy, tired eyes. Piles began to take shape as her adult children divided what was left. The younger grandchildren dashed around the mess, their energy unleashed after sitting still through the two-hour funeral. In the kitchen, the spouses chatted with beers in hand, unfazed by the solemn occasion.

How An Ace Can Set Boundaries in a Relationship
Setting boundaries as an ace person isn't easy. Known as "the invisible orientation," not experiencing sexual attraction is not something widely talked about like being straight, gay, bisexual, or transgender. With the asexual spectrum being so wide, everyone's comfort levels are different, and boundaries must be set for a relationship to work. Here's a guide for every ace person on how to establish boundaries with your partner:

Unlocking Your Best Self
Personality is more than just the way we talk or the clothes we wear. It’s a complex combination of our thoughts, behavior, emotional responses, and social attitudes that uniquely define who we are. While some aspects of personality are shaped by genetics and early life experiences, many traits can be consciously developed and refined over time. Improving your personality isn’t about pretending to be someone else—it’s about becoming the best version of yourself. In this article, we will explore actionable strategies to help you enhance your personality, build stronger relationships, and develop a confident, authentic presence in your personal and professional life. 1. Cultivate Self-Awareness The first step in improving your personality is understanding who you truly are. Self-awareness means having a clear perception of your strengths, weaknesses, emotions, and motivations. It allows you to make informed decisions and adapt your behavior to different situations. Start by asking yourself: What are my core values? How do I typically react under stress? What do others often say about my behavior? Consider keeping a journal or practicing mindfulness meditation. These habits can help you observe your thoughts and actions without judgment, fostering greater clarity and insight into your own personality. 2. Embrace a Growth Mindset A growth mindset—the belief that your abilities and qualities can be developed through effort and learning—is essential for personal development. If you view your personality as fixed, you're less likely to take steps toward improvement. But if you believe change is possible, you're more open to feedback, challenges, and new experiences. Start by identifying areas you'd like to grow, such as becoming more empathetic, outgoing, or resilient. Then, take small, consistent steps toward those goals. For instance, if you want to be a better communicator, join a public speaking club or practice active listening in daily conversations. 3. Develop Emotional Intelligence Emotional intelligence (EI) refers to your ability to understand and manage your emotions and those of others. High EI can make you more empathetic, adaptable, and persuasive—key traits of a well-rounded personality. Key components of EI include: Self-regulation: Keeping your emotions in check, especially in high-pressure situations. Empathy: Recognizing and respecting the feelings of others. Social skills: Communicating effectively, resolving conflicts, and fostering positive relationships. Improving EI takes time and practice. Start by tuning in to your emotional responses and asking yourself why you feel a certain way. Then, consider how your emotions affect your actions and the people around you. 4. Polish Your Communication Skills Communication is the bridge between your inner world and others. Whether it’s verbal, non-verbal, or written, effective communication can dramatically influence how your personality is perceived. Here are some tips to refine your communication: Listen more than you speak: Active listening shows respect and interest. Be concise and clear: Avoid unnecessary jargon and get to the point. Maintain good body language: Eye contact, open posture, and a friendly tone go a long way. Consider reading books on communication or watching TED Talks by skilled speakers. These resources can offer new insights into how to express yourself more clearly and confidently. 5. Practice Kindness and Positivity A warm and positive demeanor naturally attracts people. Being kind, helpful, and optimistic not only enhances your interpersonal relationships but also contributes to your own emotional well-being. Simple ways to practice kindness include: Complimenting others genuinely Offering help without expecting something in return Expressing gratitude regularly Positivity doesn’t mean ignoring life’s challenges, but rather choosing to approach them with hope and resilience. This mindset creates a magnetic personality that people enjoy being around. 6. Be Authentic Authenticity is a cornerstone of a strong personality. Pretending to be someone you’re not might work in the short term, but it can lead to stress and inconsistency in the long run. People appreciate honesty and sincerity, even when your views differ from theirs. To cultivate authenticity: Accept your flaws and work on them without shame Speak your truth respectfully Avoid people-pleasing behavior just to fit in Being authentic means showing up as your true self. It's about aligning your actions with your values and staying consistent in different aspects of life. 7. Expand Your Knowledge and Interests An interesting personality often comes from being a curious and well-informed individual. Learning new things not only stimulates your mind but also gives you more topics to engage others in conversation. You can broaden your perspective by: Reading books and articles on diverse topics Traveling and experiencing different cultures Taking up new hobbies or skills This continuous learning adds depth to your character and shows that you’re someone who values growth and self-improvement. 8. Build Confidence through Competence True confidence is built on competence. When you develop skills and consistently perform well in various areas of life, your self-esteem naturally improves. To build confidence: Set achievable goals and celebrate small victories Learn from failures without letting them define you Surround yourself with supportive, motivating people Confidence makes your personality shine. It allows you to take risks, express your ideas freely, and navigate life with assurance and purpose. 9. Be Open to Feedback One of the fastest ways to improve your personality is by accepting constructive feedback. While criticism can sting, it’s often a valuable tool for personal growth. Seek feedback from trusted friends, mentors, or colleagues. Ask specific questions like: “What’s one thing I could do to improve how I come across?” “Do I listen well in conversations?” Approach feedback with humility, not defensiveness. Then, use it as a guide to make meaningful adjustments. 10. Balance Ambition with Humility Ambition drives you to succeed, but humility keeps you grounded. A great personality strikes a balance between striving for excellence and acknowledging that there is always room to learn and grow. Show humility by: Giving credit to others when it’s due Admitting when you’re wrong Being open to different viewpoints Humility fosters trust, cooperation, and respect—qualities that make your personality both impressive and approachable. Final Thoughts Improving your personality is a lifelong journey. It involves both introspection and action, both learning and unlearning. The goal isn't to become perfect, but to become more self-aware, compassionate, and capable of connecting with others. Remember, personality is not about being extroverted or popular—it’s about being intentional, honest, and consistent in how you present yourself to the world. Every step you take toward self-improvement, no matter how small, contributes to a more vibrant and impactful version of you. So take the first step today. Invest in yourself, challenge your limitations, and watch as your personality blossoms into something truly remarkable.
