back to you

If the only thing you know is chaos, would you slow down to love me, or do I have to keep up to prove my love to you?

Selena's brown eyes wandered around the coffeehouse, a soft yawn escaped her mouth. The small customer service friendly yet forced, the smile fell on the ground as her body sunk under the weight of the previous crowd. The morning crew was always five minutes late, smelled of cigarettes, and never smiled for the Life of them. Though the afternoon crowd was no better, the entitlement filled the air with a stink of privilege. It was... Less than stellar.

"Um, excuse me?" A soft voice interrupted Selena's thoughts. She blinked, meeting eyes with a woman with angelic features and a smile that filled the air with warmth like the sun. Her hair was tied back up in a bun, a large letter 'Z' dawned on her chest under a brown leather jacket.

"Sorry, wasn't paying attention-something on my mind... Never mind," Selena cleared her throat as the woman giggled to herself. Selena's face warmed under the friendly giggle, "What did you order again?"

"I wanted a straight black coffee," The woman smiled and placed her hands on the counter, leaning over to check out the rest of the menu. Selena leaned back so the stranger could get a better view, but her eyes fell on her shoes, bright silver with sparkles of green and a star with the words 'Green Light' wrote in Spanish.

"What kind of shoes are those?" Selena asked with a peak at the end. The woman stepped back on her heels, letting out a huge groan.

"Sorry, these are my-shoes for my Broadway show, just that!" The woman faked a laugh and scratched her neck. Selena rolled her eyes and looked back down at her computer, "Anyway, sorry about that! I was just seeing if there was anything else-"

"Alright, hands where we can see them!" A shot fired into the air right after. People dropped to the ground, drinks spilled everywhere as two people walked through the coffeehouse doors with guns and bags in toll. Selena froze as the one who shot the weapon made eye contact.

They came stomping over toward her, "You. Safe. Now," They ordered as they waved the gun in her direction. Selena raised her hands slowly as she took a few steps toward the kitchen. Her face burning as her body came to a halt against the door of the kitchen.

"What's the holdup?" The person asked in a dark tone. Selena shook her head, and the guy held the gun up in her direction, "Words. Now,"

Selena whimpered, "I can't open it without my manager, I'm sorry," Her body fell to the ground as the person stomped over to her.

"Hey!" A familiar voice filled the air; Selena's body relaxed as her eyes made their way up to the person. Their back was toward her as they met eyes with the 'greatest basic superhero in the city," as they call themselves.

"You," The person growled with their gun in hand. The woman held their partner up and then dropped them on the ground, unconscious.

"Yes, me," The heroine huffed, "Can't a girl just go out for morning stroll and get some coffee without jackasses like you ruining my good time?" The hero stepped over the partner and headed toward the other criminal. They started to shoot at the hero but were surprised to see that the bullets had melted as soon as they hit her orbit. The criminal dropped the gun and kneeled down on the ground with their hands up.

"Thanks for making it easy on yourself, would've hated to port your ass in," The hero stepped behind the criminal. She created a pair of handcuffs to tighten around their wrists. She yanked them up by the collar and turned to the civilians.

"The situation has been contained, continue with your days. Stay safe," The hero smiled at the crowd as they cheered her way out. The hero had both criminals over her shoulders as she shifted from the coffeehouse to the police station. Selena stood back up slowly, her hand over her chest as she tried to slow her breathing. That was insane.

The day had come to an end as Selena twisted the keys in the lock. Her face held a small smile, not the fake one for the customers. Her green eyes were a soft fern as her head lifted up and met eyes with a pair of mocha eyes in the coffeehouse window. Selena's smile widens as she turned around on her heels to face the floating hero.

"Hi," The hero started in a breathless tone, clearing her throat before continuing, "I'm sorry. I'm Luz, but people call me-"

"Luz Verde, but people call you Zelena," Selena finished for Luz, whose cheek warmed up and her eyes falling to the sidewalk, "I know who you are. PS; maybe you should remember to change your shoes,"

"A night of crime fighting make you forget things like that," Luz joked, making Selena giggle. Luz bite her bottom lip and scratched her bun, "So I came back to ask you something,"

Selena looked up at her with soft eyes; Luz caught a breath in her throat, "I like you, and I wanted to know if you'd be intrested in going out with me. Minus all of this," Luz motioned down to her hero outfit.

Selena shook her head with empathy, "You? And me? On a date? No way," Selena turned on her heels and started to stroll down the street. Luz sighed and shifted in front of Selena, making Selena fall down on her butt.

"Seriously Luz," Selena huffed, dusting herself off and meeting eyes with the hero again, "Look, I like you too. You always make my day with your smile, and your positive attitude, and your sweet words of encouragement,"

"But," Luz interrupted her as she rested her feet on the ground. Her green bodysuit is glammed under the streetlight. Her boots pulsed a light gold color, and her hairband began to vibrate against her ear. Luz looked behind her to set the bright green light in the sky, like Batman but with more color. Luz's eyes fell to the sidewalk as she turned back around to meet eyes with Selena, whose eyes brimmed with tears.

"But that," Selena swallowed down a hard lump in her throat, "Go save the city, and just..." Selena closed her mouth and shook her head as she forced her way past Luz.

"Zelena, come in Zelena," Luz sighed with her eyes closed. She focused on the location as the person mumbled the coordinates. She shifted into the middle of the fight on accident.

The following day, Selena was off but still at the coffeehouse. Her hands wrapped around the hot tea with honey as her lips made the edge of the relaxing drink. Her green eyes focused on the features of the business people walking by. Her head rested against the palm of her hand, a small smile crept across her face.

She blinked; a car flew past the coffeehouse at top speeds. Luz popped out from one of her portals, melting the vehicle straight down. Luz dropped in the middle of traffic; the green light above her started to flicker as the villain barrelled toward Luz.

"Are you serious?! I hate to get coffee," Luz was interrupted as the villain slammed her head down into the road. The villain lifted her up by the bun on her head, swinging her body up to break the green light and then back down on her back.

"This city is mine Zelena! I'll send you and all your people back to where you belong," The villain exclaimed as he grabbed her bun again, forcing her face into the asphalt.

"Hey!" Selena shouted to the tops of her lungs, the fear melting away like metal on a car. The villain dropped Zelena on her face, approaching Selena, who stood her ground with a stern glare.

"And where might you be from hun?" The villain snaked around her body, snatching her up by the ankles.

Selena fell and looked up at the villain, "Your worst nightmare," Selena yanked her ankle out of the hold, kicking up on her feet. Then, Selena ran toward the villain in a fury of punches and kicks.

"Ha, is this your protector, pathetic," The villain grabbed Selena by the ankles again, yanking her into the air. Selena's head was spinning as her vision went blurry.

"You're weak! Just like your people," The villain's snake-like body continued to work its tail down Selena's body. Selena tried to shake her way down but to no avail.

"Hey, Fake Cobra," A familiar voice entered the air as Selena's eyes widen. The villain glared past Selena and down to a battered Luz, standing on shaky legs.

"I thought I killed you," The villain dropped Selena.

"Help!" Selena yelped as Luz shifted under her, dropping into her arms with a thud. Luz smirked as she sat Selena down. Then, Luz stood back up on high legs, facing the villain.

"You forgot one thing Snake Breath. Green isn't the only color in the spreturm I draw energy from," Luz grabbed onto the villain's snake-like tail and started to add heat into the villain's blood, "I call mysel basic because I mainpulate all primary colors,"

"No! Not green, blue, and-" The villain started to melt their snake-like shell from all the added heat. Zelena yanked her hand back in time as the villain fell into Zelena's arms from the top of their suit. The villain wrapped their arms around her neck.

Zelena ruled her eyes as the crowd cheered; she sat the Villian down in front of the police.

Zelena released a soft sigh, waving back at everyone. A small smile crept on her lips as she met Selena's green eyes. Zelena winked as she shifted to the following location she heard in her headband.

Later that night, Selena stood at the same broken traffic light. Her arms rested against her chest as she watched a portal open up in the spot of the traffic light. Luz popped out in her regular clothes as she floated the light back in place, melting the break with gold medals.

"Fancy meeting you here again," Luz glanced down in the direction of the voice. Selena smiled and waved at her.

"Says the girl who willingly ran out in front of a villian today," Luz rested down in front of Selena with her hands in her pockets. They both smiled at each other and laughed.

"Well, couldn't just let you die right," Selena added in a whisper, swallowing back a lump in her throat. Luz smiled back sympathetically, caressing Selena's cheek.

"I'm sorry-"

"No I'm sorry," Selena started, laying her hand into Luz's hand, "Life is short, and if that fight taguht me anything... It's that you're gonna save anyone for the greater good, and that's what I love most about you Luz. Good, bad, ugly. I want to be ther for you,"

Luz smiled and pecked Selena's lips with a giggle, "I think the air is lighter now," Luz joked as she started to float a bit. Selena giggled and grabbed her hand to keep her from floating away.

"So! Wanna go to Mars or Pluto for our first date?" Luz asked.

"Rome sounds lovely," Selena rolled her eyes toward Luz with a smile. Luz's feet touched the ground. Her body rested against Selena as they turned on their heels and walked through one of Luz's portals.
