Rarest Marijuana Strains That Do Indeed Exist

Once in a blue moon, smokers will claim to have hit a strain that no one has ever heard of. Are they real, or are they just one of the rarest marijuana strains on Earth?

Whether it's just due to the ability to brag about your drug connects or just a random part of stoner culture, a lot of people tend to claim to have smoked seriously strong, seriously rare strains of weed. Sometimes, newbies will even lie about a certain strain just to look more experienced than they really are.

Learning to brag about rare strains seems to be part of Weed 101 for Beginners—at least for some folks. Regardless of the reasons, there are a bunch of weed strains that are somewhat legendary due to their rarity. Some of us don't even realize which ones are rare until we're told they're rare by a third party.

A lot of the super rare cannabis strains also happen to be the priciest strains on the market, but not always. It is very possible to smoke rare weed without realizing how rare it is.

Most of us, at one point or another, have wondered if we've smoked one of the rarest marijuana strains on Earth at one point or another. Grab joint or a pen and keep an eye out—if you've ever smoked one of these, you have enjoyed a seriously rare strain.

Malawi Gold

Most people tend to brush off Malawi Gold as a legendary strain that doesn't really exist. However, the truth is that it's been around for decades and continues to be one of the rarest marijuana strains on the planet to be recognized by its golden hue.

Part of the reason that it's so rare is that it takes around 120 days to harvest, which makes it a hard crop to grow for people looking for a rapid turnaround. Still, its sweet and spicy flavor makes it coveted among cannaseurs.

Lamb's Breath

Unlike Malawi Gold, which is mostly seen as a myth, everyone generally knows that Lamb's Breath is real. The reason why is because it's a favorite cannabis strain in Jamaica, and regularly gets mentioned in classic reggae songs. It's also the most popular strain of weed in Rastafarianism.

With a maximum THC count of 22 percent, Lamb's Breath definitely packs a powerful and uplifting punch. However, stateside, it's one of the rarest marijuana strains money can buy thanks to the issue of customs intercepting shipments.

Idukki Gold

Idukki Gold is not a strain you'll probably ever see in the United States, but that's not the only reason why it's considered to be one of the rarest marijuana strains on Earth. This cannabis strain, native to the Kerala area of India, has become critically endangered because of police crackdowns throughout the state.

Tragically, Idukki Gold could become extinct if measures aren't taken to preserve the plant.

Hindu Kush

Yes, most of us have heard of Hindu Kush and know it as the legendary 100 percent indica strain that people have come to adore. Surprisingly, this also happens to be one of the rarest marijuana strains to find in dispensaries and coffee shops.

Why, you ask?

People prefer the hybrids far more to the OG. We really wish every weed buyer's guide would suggest giving Hindu Kush a try; it'd be a shame to see this be hybridized out of existence.

Puna Budder

If you were alive in the 70s, or just know a lot of lore from that decade, you might recognize Puna Budder as one of the most popular strains from way back in the day. This Afghan-Hawaiian hybrid blend was known for a buzz that lasted and lasted thanks to its 20 percent THC rating.

Police crackdowns almost entirely eliminated this strain, making it one of the rarest marijuana strains in America.

Neville’s Haze

Hazes haven't really been popular stateside, even with pothead icons like Jimi Hendrix talking about the benefits of Purple Haze. Neville's Haze might sound like something that was Harry Potter-inspired, but the fact is that it's just a really good strain from Green House Seeds.

The demand in Kush and hybrids has made Neville's Haze one of the rarest marijuana strains to spot in dispensaries. However, it's still pretty common in home growing collections.

Chronic

Legendary rapper Dr. Dre made the word "chronic" synonymous with weed back in the 90s, and to a point, it's easy to forget that Chronic is actually a pretty strong strain of cannabis because of it.

This strain experienced a major boom in the 90s, but these days, demand plummeted. This Skunk, AK-47, and Northern Lights hybrid still remains potent as ever. However, it still remains really hard to find in dispensaries simply because it's not as popular as it was 20 years ago.

Panama Red

Known for its brightly colored red accents, Panama Red was a staple of 1960s stoner culture. However, this strain of pure sativa is becoming increasingly rare due to the increased demand for cannabis hybrids.

Though there are still a lot of pockets of Panama Red growers in the Northwest, it's considered to be a relic of a different era—as well as one of the rarest marijuana strains in North America.

Oaxacan Highland

At first glance, Oaxacan Highland almost doesn't really resemble cannabis as we know it today. This old school strain was incredibly popular back in the 60s and 70s. Known for towering up to 12 feet in height, the reason why this is now one of the rarest marijuana strains in the world is rather sad.

The rise in cartel violence in its native growing region has made cultivation extremely risky. Because of the fear of getting killed for growing cannabis for the wrong people, the once-popular crop is quickly fading from sight.

Angola Roja

Most of the rarest cannabis strains have relatively recent histories, but not this African strain. Currently ranked as one of the oldest and rarest weed strains on Earth, this particular cannabis crop has a lineage that can be traced all the way back to the 1500s—when Portugal first colonized Angola.

Word has it that Angola Roja is the cannabis strain that fathered a lot of the North American strains we enjoy today. However, this strain is becoming difficult to find due to the illegalization of cannabis in Angola. Precious little herb gets out of the country, which means this is probably going to go extinct in its native form.

Black African Magic

Very few cannabis strains are visibly recognizable from all other strains due to their color—but Black African Magic definitely fits that description. This is one of the rarest marijuana strains in the world, and also one of the most easily recognizable because of it's dark brown to black color.

Rappers allegedly love this strain because of how potent it is. Whether or not you get to ever have a puff of the magic yourself, though, is up to pure luck. It's really just that rare.
