At one time, marijuana held the leading position in the list of the most cultivated plants in the world, and was absolutely legal. Nowadays, cannabinoids are included in the list of the most dangerous substances along with heroin, and other hard drugs.

There are many scientific papers on the effects of marijuana on human health, which talk about both advantages and disadvantages of its abuse. But the results of these scientific works do not always give us a whole picture of how cannabis use affects its fans over the long run. Deprived of objective information, we live in a somewhat twisted world: some people consider cannabis to be a panacea, others–absolute evil.

Therefore, we have collected the results of recent research in this area, and are ready to explain how marijuana affects the work of particular organs.

Lungs

Scientific papers on the effects of marijuana smoking on the breathing organs may puzzle you with their discrepancy.

Some researchers say that THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) has useful anti-inflammatory effects, and deep whiffs can increase the lungs' volume. Other papers emphasize that smoking cannabis has the same negative effects on the breathing organs as tobacco smoke. Although THC has tumor suppressive effects, the smoke that a person inhales when using marijuana is harmful. Perhaps the alternative ways of smoking can help to neutralize the negative effects on the body, but we need more research on this topic to confirm this hypothesis.

Muscular System

Cannabidiol (it is a non-psychoactive cannabis component) prevents myositis. This condition is manifested in muscle pain, and often occurs in sportsmen who deal with intense physical exercise quite frequently. Moreover, clinical studies have proven the efficacy and safety of cannabis in chronic pain.

Brain

Marijuana has anti-inflammatory effects on brain cells, which make cannabis a useful substance in the control of some neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease.

Recent studies have shown that tetrahydrocannabinol, and other compounds of marijuana can help get rid of the toxic protein–beta-amyloid, which causes inflammation that destroys the nerve cells of the brain.

Cannabinoids have very similar properties as endocannabinoids that the human body produces on its own to transmit signals in the brain. Cannabinoids protect nerve cells from the formation of an excess beta-amyloid.

Laboratory tests on animals showed a sedative effect of cannabidiol. Some studies say that this substance enhances mental clarity and alertness.

Sexuality

Smoking marijuana increases libido, and a person can improve orgasm thanks to more emotionally-involved and relaxed contact with his partner. Marijuana allows its user not only to feel better and more comfortable in his body, but also causes the release of oxytocin (a hormone responsible for a feeling of intimacy and affection) which makes the connection with the partner stronger. However, there are studies that talk about the negative effects of marijuana on the male reproductive system. But some European singles who use cannabis says their genital system works better than ever.

Sleep

Marijuana helps you to fall asleep, provided you smoke indica, not sativa. Indica is relaxing type of marijuana, and sativa is stimulating.

However, cannabis also affects the quality of your dream. Marijuana increases the duration of the slow delta sleep when the body relaxes and rests, but simultaneously, it shortens the deepest delta sleep when we see dreams.

Mental Health

The endocannabinoid system of a person is responsible for controlling the levels of anxiety and stress. Marijuana has some relaxing properties, because of cannabinoids that have similar effects with endocannabinoids.

Recent studies suggest that cannabis does not raise the risk of both psychiatric illnesses on the anxiety spectrum and affective illnesses such as melancholy and depression. On the contrary, scientists say that it may be helpful in treating atypical psychoses in schizophrenia patients.

Treatment of Diseases

THC has a mild and moderate analgesic effect, and can be used to treat pain. THC stimulates appetite, causes a relaxed state, and affects the sense of smell, hearing, and vision.

CBD (Cannabidiols) can relieve nausea symptoms and eliminate anxiety, inflammation, and convulsions. Some oncologists believe that CBD can inhibit the growth of cancer cells.
