The Easy Way to Grow Magic Mushrooms from Home

The process of growing psilocybin mushrooms or “magic mushrooms” is relatively easy, but it involves time and patience. For many growers, it is a fun, relatively low-cost hobby. If you are new to growing mushrooms, you should consider buying a grow kit. They contain everything you need to grow your mushrooms at a high success rate. But if you want to build your own growing and fruiting kits, you can follow the steps below.

There are many supplies needed in order to successfully grow your mushrooms, here is a list of supplies you’ll need.

Supplies needed:

  • Psilocybe Cubensis spore syringes from Spores 101 or Sporeworks.
  • Sterilized substrate jars from Midwest Grow Kits or you can buy a grow kit from Cali Grow Kits.
  • DIY fruiting chamber or you can buy one from mushbox.co.
  • Timer outlet or you can pick one up from your local Home Depot or hardware store.
  • Rubber or latex gloves
  • Nail
  • Hammer
  • Rubbing alcohol (for sterilization)
  • Heating mat
  • Thermometer/hygrometer or you can pick one up from your local hardware store or Walmart.
  • Mushroom drying kit

Step One

Poke 4 small holes in the lid of the substrate jar(s), evenly spaced around their circumference. Use a sterilized nail and a hammer to poke holes in the lid while the lid is on a DIFFERENT jar.

Step 2

Sterilize the syringe and proceed to inject the spores into the sterilized substrate jar(s) dividing the liquid into 4 quarters (1 for each hole in the lid).

Step 3

Allow the jar(s) to incubate for 3-4 weeks. The substrate should turn fully white by the end.

Step 4

Remove the lid from the jar(s). While wearing gloves, flip the substrate into your hand and place in your fruiting chamber. Allow the fruiting stage to begin. See "Fruiting Conditions" for more information.

Step 5

Wait for mushrooms to grow 4 times their initial size and pick them.

Step 6

Place the freshly picked mushrooms in a mushroom drying kit, dry for 36 hours.

Your magic mushrooms are ready to be eaten! Enjoy!

How To Make Your Own Substrate Jars

For each jar, thoroughly combine ⅔ cup of vermiculite and ¼ cup water in a mixing bowl. Drain the excess water using a disinfected strainer.

Add ¼ cup brown rice flour to the mixing bowl and combine with the moist vermiculite.

Proceed to fill sterilized jars, be careful not to pack too tightly. Fill the jars to within about a half-inch from the rims. Then sterilize that top half-inch with rubbing alcohol.

Top off the jars with a layer of dry vermiculite to insulate the substrate from contaminants.

Fruiting Conditions:

Light

When growing shrooms, you can use either natural sunlight or artificial light (fluorescent lights or grow lights). When using natural light, rotate the chamber regularly, because if there is too much light in one area it will mainly grow there, compromising your yield. When using artificial light, use a timer outlet to simulate alternating between day and night cycles (12 hours on, 12 hours off).

Temperature

The temperature must remain between 75-85°F (24-30°C). Place a thermometer in the fruiting chamber to monitor the temperature. Use a heating mat/pad to raise the temperature if needed.

Humidity

Humidity levels must remain high (95 percent+). In order to do so, mist the fruiting chamber with water occasionally. Place a hygrometer in the fruiting chamber to monitor the humidity.
