Understanding Vape Atomizers

Generally, an atomizer refers to any device that transforms the water, perfume, and other liquids into mist or a fine spray. However, in the vaping world, an atomizer is the component in a vape device whose primary function is heating the vape juice into vapor.

You may come across the term ‘atomizer’ being used interchangeably with various other vaporizer components. For instance, some people confuse the atomizer with the vape coils or even the tanks that hold your e-juice. The term may also be used to denote clearomizers, cartomizers, and rebuildable. It’s important to know what a vape atomizer is, especially when you’re looking for vape accessories. Not only will that knowledge save you from buying the wrong vape accessory, but it will also ensure that you get an atomizer suitable for your specific vape device.

The common confusion between atomizers and heating coils emanates from the fact that atomizers are the components in a vaporizer that houses the heating coils. These coils have a measuring unit as ohms, referring to the amount of resistance. However, the ohms are usually expressed in terms of the atomizer and not the heating coils.

Atomizers with lower ohm levels require more power than those with higher ohm levels. There are also sub-ohm atomizers, which refer to atomizers whose coils have a resistance below 1.0 ohm.

How Do Atomizers Work?

Vape atomizers function by a simple mechanism. When you turn your vaporizer on, you consequently activate the battery by completing the electrical circuit. The battery then offers power to the heating coils, allowing the atomizer to kick into action.

By design, the coils in a vaporizer connect to the e-juice reservoir tank through a wick. You can find wick made up of silica, cotton, rayon, or hemp. Also, the wick is ever submerged in the e-juice, and due to capillary force, it remains moist throughout.

When the heating starts, the e-juice on the wick begins to warm up. The liquid then vaporizes at a particular temperature, depending on its components. As vaper sucks at the vaporizer, they draw the vapor from the device to their lungs.

Atomizers work automatically. However, that only applies to atomizers that have already been installed into the vape unit. You may have acquired a new atomizer and are wondering how to get it to work. In such a case, the process may be complicated as there’s some setting-up required.

The following process details how to set up an atomizer in a vaporizer;

Prepare the coil

Every atomizer has a built-in deck designed to hold the coil. Carefully place the coil in this deck, following the manufacturer’s manual.

If your atomizer operates with more than one heating coil, remember to repeat the process for each coil.

Check the limits of your battery

You want your vape battery to perform optimally and last as long as it possibly can. To do that, you’ll need to establish the battery’s optimal range by checking the heating coils on a vape mod or ohm-meter.

Check for hot spots in your coils

Heating coils, particularly those that sit in contact with one another, may have hot spots. You should remove these hot spots by burning the coils slowly, ensuring that they glow evenly. After eliminating the hot spots, allow your coil some time to cool down.

Prepare the wick

After taking care of the coils and battery, prepare your wick by placing its tails in the wicking channels. Note that the wick channels may be too small, so take your time and ensure it goes all the way. Another thing to remember is to go for a long enough wick that can reach the bottom of the tank.

Once the wick is in place, prime it by dripping a small amount of the e-juice on the coil. After getting the wick saturated, turn on the battery and let the atomizer do the rest.

How blissful your vaping experience is will largely depend on the performance of the atomizer. And that performance is affected by a variety of factors, including the coil’s electrical resistance, the atomizer’s airflow, and the wick’s efficiency.

Therefore, always ensure that the atomizer fires to the specifications of your coil. If you’re new to vaping, start low, and gradually adjust until you achieve your desired heating levels. Alternatively, you can consider a rebuildable dripping atomizer (RDA). It allows you to keep dripping whenever you sense the device is getting dry. Another option is a rebuildable tank atomizer (RTA), which will enable you to control your vaping by filling up the tank with an e-juice. You might consider an RTDA also known as a rebuildable dripping tank atomizer that combines the vape control characteristics of an RTA and RDA.
