Nikon Corporation was founded in Japan in July 25,1917, under the name Nippon Kōgaku Kōgyō Kabushikigaisha, which translates to "Japan Optical Industries Co., Ltd." The company was created as a merger of two smaller optical companies, one of which, "Goichi Nakamura Laboratory," was founded by three individuals: Saburo Uchida, one of the leading figures in the Japanese optical industry at the time, Takeshi Yamashita, a scientist and engineer who had worked on developing optical instruments for the Japanese military, and Helmut K. Neumann, a German engineer who had come to Japan to work for the company.

The company's main focus at the beginning was to develop and manufacture optical instruments for the Japanese military, such as binoculars, telescopes, and periscopes. After World War II, with the help of Neumann, the company turned its attention to the civilian market and began to develop cameras. The first Nikon camera, the Nikon I, was released in 1948.

The Nikon name itself was first used in 1932, when the company released the Nikon I rangefinder camera. The name "Nikon," which is derived from "Nippon Kōgaku" (Japan Optical), was chosen to reflect the company's commitment to precision and quality.

Nikon's early cameras were rangefinder cameras, similar to the Leica and Contax cameras that were popular at the time. However, in 1959, Nikon released the Nikon F, the first SLR camera with a motor drive, which would become an industry standard and Nikon's flagship camera model for the next decade.

Throughout the years, Nikon has continued to innovate and improve its products, introducing new technologies such as autofocus and video capabilities to its cameras. Today, Nikon is a household name in the photography industry and is known for its high-quality cameras and lenses that are used by professional and amateur photographers alike.

In conclusion, Nikon was founded by Saburo Uchida, Takeshi Yamashita, and Helmut K. Neumann in 1917, initially as an optical instrument manufacturer for the Japanese military. After World War II, the company turned to the civilian market and developed its first camera, the Nikon I, in 1948. The brand Nikon was first used in 1932. The company continues to innovate and improve its products, making it a household name in the photography industry.
