In a world full of social media enthusiasts whose only goal is to reach a certain amount of likes on their photos, a camera has become an essential part of life because only a high-quality aesthetic photo can catch the eye of the feed scrollers throughout the world.

While buying a camera, generally we have these two options to consider.

1. A digital SLR

2. A compact camera

The question arises: which one is good for our needs? We don't want to take just photos, we want to take high-quality photos to gain followers, right? Here, I am going to answer some basic questions that will help you decide which one to fetch on the basis of your needs.

1. What is my budget?

Whenever we want to buy something, the first thing we check is whether it's in our pocket’s range or not. If we compare the prices of compact and digital SLRs, digital cameras are way too expensive than compact ones. The lenses has to be bought separately which require additional expanses, depending on the quality and size f the lens.

If you don't want to spend that much on your routine photography, then a digital camera is not an option for you. But, if you're going to use a camera for professional work, then you might want to consider it because it will pay you off later anyway. That can be considered an investment.

2. Can I carry it around?

Compact cameras are much smaller and lighter than digital cameras hence easier to carry. While you have to carry a bag for a digital camera, a compact camera can fit easily in your jeans’ pocket.

The bulk of digital cameras are twice that of a compact camera. Now there are some DSLRs available that are lighter than others, but if you have additional lenses, it becomes difficult to carry them around along with the camera.

3. Can I make videos with it?

Digital SLRs couldn't record videos until 2000’s but now that they do, they're much better than compact cameras. And since a digital camera allows you to change lenses, it allows a variety of creativity! You can take wide-angle shots and close-ups that will look professional with DSLR and they'll cost much less than the high-end digital video cameras.

Hence, you can make your own movies with a DSLR, and if you are planning to go on youtube and other such apps, this is what's going to help you get some eye-catching results and you can use your talents and a good camera to get the fame that you deserve.

Compact camera can record HD videos but the quality is not as good as the DSLRs.

4. Can I zoom?

Both cameras allow you to zoom the view you are capturing but have different ways.

1. Manual zoom (in digital SLR) means you have to rotate the lens to zoom in and out, which is much quicker and controlled method.

2. Electronic zoom (in compact camera) means you have to push a button, this method is a little slower.

5. What is the zoom range?

While zoom on a digital camera is faster, it doesn't allow the wide range of zoom that the compact camera does. A compact camera allows a zoom range of 10x to 12x and can take both wide-angle and telephoto shots.

If you want to reach that level of the zoom range and get those wide-angle and telephoto shots on a digital SLR, you have to buy additional lenses which further decrease its probability and increase its cost.

Keep in mind that dust might get inside when changing the lens so it might ruin the image quality, so keeping it clean is another task that comes with a DSLR)

Conclusion:

If your goal is to capture professional-looking photos and create awesome videos, want to take pictures in dim light, or want to show off your photography skills and money is not a problem for you, then without a doubt, digital SLR is the best.

But, if you want an easy-to-carry low-budget camera for your non-professional use and routine photography, to capture the moments of your trips and go for some outdoor photography in a good light then you might want to consider a compact camera.
