A Simple Ritual, A Lifetime of Memories

A quiet ritual that turned ordinary mornings into lasting memories

I always try to get the timing just right.

A quick glance out the window tells me everything I need to know—we haven’t missed it yet. There’s still time.

I pull you close, wrapping you in my dressing gown, your cheek pressed against mine. We stand together like that, tucked into our own little world, safe from the cold bite of winter outside. For a moment, nothing else matters.

Then we hear it—a distant rumble.

You lift your head, eyes bright with excitement. You already know what it means. It’s coming.

Soon enough, it appears. The garbage truck rolls down the street, loud and steady, like it always does. As it gets closer, the driver slows, leans out of his window, and gives us a friendly wave.

It’s such a small thing, really. Just a truck making its rounds.

But to us, it’s more than that.

It’s something we can count on. Something that comes back, week after week, no matter what else changes. A quiet ritual woven into our days, especially during those slow, ordinary weeks. Each time it passes, it leaves behind something more than just an empty street—it adds another small, shining moment to our growing collection of memories.

Time moves on, the way it always does.

Before I know it, things begin to change.

You’re walking now. No longer needing to be carried all the time, you stand beside me instead, proud and steady. Spring has arrived, and the air feels soft and full of life. When the familiar rumble returns, you reach for me—not out of fear, but for comfort. I lift you anyway, holding you close as the truck passes. You smile and wave, just like before.

The days keep slipping by.

Summer comes, warm and bright. Now you’re in shorts and sandals, running freely around the yard while we wait. You explore everything, curious about the world in a way only a child can be. But the moment you hear that sound again, you stop and turn.

“We have to stand back,” you tell me, serious and certain.

And so we do.

You hold your ground, standing tall, waving with confidence as the truck passes by. It’s no longer just me guiding you—you’re beginning to understand things for yourself.

Life keeps picking up speed.

Soon, daycare becomes part of our routine. Mornings feel busier, more structured, but somehow we still find a way to make room for this small tradition. No matter how rushed things get, we pause—just for a moment—to watch and wave.

Then autumn arrives.

Leaves drift down from the trees, covering the ground in shades of gold and red. One day, as the truck pulls up, the driver leans out again—but this time, he’s holding something.

A small box.

We step closer, curious. Inside, there’s an Easter egg waiting for you. Your face lights up as you reach in and take it, like you’ve just been handed something magical. It’s such a simple gesture, but it means everything.

And just like that, another memory is made.

Then, almost without warning, the cold returns.

This morning, the air feels sharp again, like winter has quietly come back around. You run outside ahead of me, barefoot and laughing, as if the chill doesn’t touch you at all.

I watch you for a moment, then remind myself—next time, make sure you’re wearing shoes.

Because it will come again.

The rumble down the street.

The wave from the driver.

The small, steady ritual that carries us through the seasons.

And each time it returns, we’ll be there—just a little older, a little different, but still together, holding onto these fleeting moments as they pass.
