American Eskimo Dogs are the best dogs, and I might be a bit biased, but I have a pretty good reason. Let me introduce you to Maz, my beloved Eskie. I first encountered Maz when I moved into a new apartment during my first year of grad school in Los Angeles. In search of affordable furniture, I stumbled upon a patio set online and hurried across town to purchase it. Little did I know I would come home with much more than just furniture.

On the sidewalk, I encountered Maz—a skinny and flea-ridden dog with patches of missing fur from incessant scratching. Despite her pitiful condition, she managed to wag her tail upon seeing me. I couldn't resist kneeling down to stroke her head. After loading up the patio set, I tried enticing Maz into the car with an In-n-Out burger patty, but she was too weak to show interest. Taking a leap of faith, I carefully picked her up, hoping she wouldn't bite my face. Unbeknownst to me, I had just lifted the sweetest dog on Earth into my arms.

Upon bringing her home, I gave Maz a thorough flea bath and did everything I could to make her comfortable. Several visits to the vet and a couple of surgeries later, Maz, a seven-year-old American Eskimo Dog, officially became my COVID dog. She supported me through a difficult breakup. She witnessed me fall into the deepest love with my incredible fiancé. She got me through graduate school, and she’ll be at my wedding. She has been my savior during my darkest moments. While I hope she lives to see my children, I will forever cherish the time spent with her in her golden years. It is because of Maz that I can confidently affirm the American Eskimo Dog as the best family dog. Let's delve into some of the breed's traits that support my passion for these dogs.

Intelligence and Trainability:

American Eskimo Dogs are highly intelligent and possess sharp minds that allow them to excel in various activities, including obedience training, tricks, agility, conformation, and dog sports. Their history as circus performers in the nineteenth century is a testament to their quick learning abilities and captivating nature. However, their intelligence also calls for early obedience training to prevent them from outsmarting their owners. Training not only ensures proper behavior but also establishes the family as the pack leader, earning the Eskie's respect and fostering a harmonious household. Just one small example of this intelligence and trainability in my own life is that Maz learned to sit in just one day.

Watchdog Instinct and Vocalization:

Despite their small size, American Eskimo Dogs possess a strong watchdog instinct. They are vigilant and will bark to alert their owners of any strangers approaching. However, it is essential to provide them with proper training and socialization to avoid excessive barking. While they may be initially cautious around unfamiliar individuals, they warm up over time. Moreover, their unique vocalizations, including barks, yowls, and even "talking," make them excellent companions for those seeking a dog with a lot to say. I can confirm that Maz loves to make herself heard. A few times at five in the morning.

Compatibility with Children and Other Pets:

The friendly and affectionate nature of American Eskimo Dogs makes them an excellent choice for families with children of all ages. They readily adapt to the presence of other dogs, cats, and various pets. However, as with any breed, supervision is crucial during interactions between dogs and young children to ensure safety and prevent any accidental injuries. Their temperament and natural inclination to be a part of the family unit make them an ideal addition to households seeking a furry friend for everyone to enjoy. Maz somehow manages to stay on the good side of her little Chihuahua/Yorkie sister, and she’s always gentle with my two-year-old niece.

Activity Levels and Adaptability:

Every day at 3:00 pm, Maz sits up from her long nap and stares at me. This is my cue that she’s ready for her hour-long afternoon walk. American Eskimo Dogs are naturally active and require regular exercise, especially during their younger years. Engaging them in physical activities, such as walks, playtime, and mental stimulation, is vital to prevent boredom-related behaviors like excessive barking and destructive chewing. While they may become more sedate as they age, they still appreciate affection, petting, and cuddling. They are adaptable and can thrive in both bustling households and apartment settings, as long as they receive ample exercise opportunities.

Grooming and Maintenance:

One cannot help but be enamored by the American Eskimo Dog's striking white coat, which consists of a dense undercoat and a longer outer coat. Regular brushing is essential to manage shedding and prevent matting, particularly behind the ears. Despite their light color, Eskies are surprisingly easy to keep clean due to the presence of natural oils in their fur, which repels dirt. Baths should be limited to avoid dryness and skin issues. Routine checks of their ears and nails, along with general grooming, contribute to their overall well-being. We take Maz to the groomer about once every two months, and we give her a bath once every two weeks just to make her smell fresh, otherwise, she is a very clean dog.

Health Considerations:

Like any breed, American Eskimo Dogs have specific health concerns to be aware of, such as hip dysplasia, Legg-Calve-Perthes Disease, progressive retinal atrophy (PRA), and juvenile cataracts. It is crucial to obtain puppies from responsible breeders who provide health clearances for the parents, ensuring a healthier start in life for your new companion. Regular veterinary check-ups and a nutritious diet tailored to their size, age, and activity level are essential for their overall health and well-being.

Adoption Opportunities:

For those considering adding an American Eskimo Dog to their family, rescue groups provide a valuable avenue for adoption or fostering. Many Eskies end up in these groups due to lack of understanding about the breed's needs. Adopting from a rescue group gives you the opportunity to provide a loving home to a dog in need while experiencing the joy of welcoming a new family member.

The American Eskimo Dog emerges as the perfect companion for families, combining an adorable appearance, intelligence, and an affectionate nature. Their lively personalities, adaptability to different living situations, and compatibility with children and other pets make them a popular choice. By providing them with appropriate training, exercise, and socialization, families can enjoy years of companionship, laughter, and unforgettable memories with their Eskie. Consider adopting an American Eskimo Dog and discover why they are the best dogs for families. I know that Maz has made an incredible impact on my life, and I’ll forever be grateful for her.
