The most expensive fish in the world are at the same time the rarest in the world. Collectors are willing to spend hundreds of thousands for them. Today we’re taking a look at the most expensive fish ever sold in the world. As one would expect, all these fish are exotic and relatively small in size. They are all fabulous and some of them are even quite intelligent such as the Platinum Arowana.

10. Candy Basslet – $1,000

Least expensive in the list but still quite expensive for how small the fish is, we have the Candy Basslet. A curious combination of red with blue stripes adorns this fish’s body. At the price range of $1,000 you can have one of these in your aquarium swimming eerily.

The Candy Basslet is part of the larger family (Serranidae) of sea basses, groupers and reef basslets. It’s one of 23 to 27 species (depending upon whom you cite) of reef basslets in the subfamily Liopropomini. The reef basslets have always been some of my favorite aquarium fish because they’re generally hardy, attractive, easy to feed, disease-resistant, and remain small. Also, since they do not pick at sessile invertebrates, they’re an ideal choice for the coral reef aquarium. One caveat: They will eat any shrimp or crab that’s small enough to fit into their mouth. This is less of an issue with the smaller members of genus, such as the Candy Basslet, but something to consider with larger species, such as the Wrasse Bass (L. eukrines), which can reach 6 inches in length.

9. Clarion Angelfish – $2,500

Clarion Angelfish can grow up to 30 cm what is approximately 11 inches. 1 specimen basically needs at least 3600cm2 of water surface which is approximately 558 square inch. It is recommended to raise this species in fish tanks that are very large. (e) Medium aquariums have at least 113 Litres (30 US Gallons). Large aquariums have at least 265 Litres (70 US Gallons). Very large aquariums hold at least 700 Litres (185 US Gallons).

Australian Flathead Perch

Australian Flathead Perch, formally known as Rainfordia opercularis, is the first fish on this list with a flathead. It can be rarely found in the coral reefs of western Australia and is extremely popular. All of that make it a very expensive fish. $5,000 worth expensive in fact.

LiveAquaria has been teasing with promise of offering one of the rarest reef basslets ever documented in the aquarium hobby, the flathead perch, Rainfordia opercularis. Our first encounter with the flathead perch began with a specimen that was acquired by Matt Wandell of the Steinhart Aquarium. In just the last few months we’ve seen specimens of flathead perch being offered for sale from Japanese marine aquarium stores who sold their specimens for upwards of eight thousand dollars.

LiveAquaria is representing the U.S. rare fish scene by finally offering up this species to American rare fish collectors, in tonight’s Divers’ Den, for $4,999. IN addition to its very unusual body shape and bold color patterns, the flathead perch has a very unique method of stalking its prey and whoever ends up with this trophy fish will surely be rewarded with a very unique reef fish species.

It's insane how much these fish are worth but then again we often put prices on things that probably don't need it. In my mind these creatures are priceless.
