Many people seem to believe cat care is simply a matter of providing them with food and litter. They don’t realize cats also need proper nutrition, clean surroundings, veterinary care, mental stimulation, and a safe home.

Understanding Cats Needs

Understanding and providing for your cat’s needs, regardless of their age, ensures they have a good quality of life. This is a truth we firmly believe in here at Special Little Whiskers Sanctuary. So what does this entail?

Proper Nutrition and Fresh Water

To support your cat’s overall health they need a balanced diet. This means understanding their life stage and individual needs. Doing so allows you to choose a complete and balanced cat food appropriate for them. Your veterinarian can provide you with guidance here.

You also need to provide them with fresh water daily. Some cats prefer water fountains. These should be placed away from their food.

Both food and water must be served in clean bowls. They should also be monitored for any sudden changes. These can indicate health issues.

A Clean Litter Box

It’s important to keep your cat’s litter box clean and ensure it’s easily accessible. It should be in a quiet location. Typically this means having one litter box per cat, plus one extra. These should be placed in various areas throughout your home so cats aren’t competing over them.

You also need to scoop waste daily and wash the litter box itself regularly. The task becomes easier when you use litter bags inside the box before putting in the litter.

If your cat suddenly stops using the litter box or going to the bathroom in other places, you shouldn’t automatically assume this is a behavioral issue. Many medical conditions (e.g., urinary tract infections, pain, stress) can cause these issues too.

A Safe and Comfortable Home

Cats need places to rest, hide, climb, scratch, and observe their surroundings. As such they’ll need you to provide them with comfortable bedding, scratching places, toys, and safe hiding spots.

While many people assume their cat shouldn’t hide, this isn’t true. Just like humans cats need somewhere to retreat when they become overwhelmed by their environment.

Having a safe home also requires you to keep toxic plants, medications, cleaning products, and other hazards out of reach. Make sure windows and screens are also kept secure .

Support for Their Physical and Emotional Well-Being

Your cat needs you to play with them 15-30 minutes twice daily. Encourage movement and mental stimulation by using interactive toys (e.g., wands), puzzle feeders, and plenty of climbing spaces.

What your cat enjoys has a lot to do with their personality so get to know it. While many cats enjoy attention and active play, there are some who prefer quiet companionship.

To learn what your cat enjoys, monitor their body language and behavior. This is how they’ll communicate with you. When your cat starts hiding, has a sudden change in their appetite, becomes unusually more vocal, or suddenly turns aggressive they may be trying to tell you they’re fearful, stressed, uncomfortable, or sick. If you notice any of these signs you should respond patiently, not punish them.

Routine Veterinary Care

By providing routine veterinary care for your cat you’ll be able to identify any health issues before they become more serious. Your veterinarian will also be able to advise you about vaccinations, flea and tic treatment, dental care, spaying or neutering, and age-appropriate health monitoring. They’ll also provide you with more information if your cat is disabled, elderly, or chronically ill. These cats frequently require additional support, medication, or adjustments to their living space.

Making Cat Care Work for Your Budget and Circumstances

Things like money and your own health issues can make it challenging to care for your cat. While planning ahead does help, it can only do so much. When unforeseen circumstances do arise, what do you do for your cat?

Make sure you seek assistance early. Most areas have pet food pantries and low cost vet clinics available. Some also have temporary care arrangements you can utilize.

Just because you need help doesn’t mean you love your cat any less. Taking the time and steps to find support not only makes it easier for you to take care of your cat but it may also help them stay home with you instead of being surrendered to a shelter.

Every Cat Deserves Compassionate Care

To take care of your cat you must pay attention to them. Note any changes so you can adapt to their needs. While many cats don’t need much help, there are some who require lifelong medical care and environmental accommodations.

At Special Little Whiskers Sanctuary, we provide these cats with a permanent home while striving to keep as many cats in their homes as possible. This is why we’re building a library of cat care resources. We believe that by helping you ensure your cat thrives you’ll be able to ensure they feel safe and loved in their own home.
