The Chateleon

Introduction

The Chateleon

They wondered where the titbits went from the kitchen. They thought the kids were taking them, but the kids denied any wrongdoing. They said that they must have a ghost or a poltergeist (German for 'rumbling ghost' or 'noisy spirit'), but there was no noise.

Whatever was stealing the titbits was quiet and left no traces. They wondered if it could be mice or even a rat.

If any meat, fish, or chicken was left out on a worktop and not used within five minutes, it was gone. Something had absonded with it. But what?

Although they tried to be careful, they soon forgot to keep their eyes on the food, and as if by magic, it was gone.

Then they noticed a movement and some crumbs on the settee.

Looking closer, they saw that it was a cat that they did not know was in the house. It merged in with the furnishing almost perfectly.

They did not know how long it had been living there.

It was a beautiful cat and seemed to love being stroked.

It had hidden itself so well, almost like a chameleon, the children called it "Chateleon" and wanted to keep it. It had no collar, so they decided they had a cat now, and it would keep any mice out.

Tomorrow they would get a cat bowl, cat food and treats, but for now Chateleon enjoyed the extra titbits.
