A few days ago, I mentioned that I was looking for a kitten. I preferred to rescue a kitten vs. buying one, but when I had no luck adopting from a rescue organization, I contacted a seller. Yes, I know, it’s wrong to buy a kitten when there are so many cats and kittens looking for a home, but to understand the situation I refer you to this article.

Today was the day we picked up the new addition to our family and we called her Sonsie.

It took a $50 Uber ride to get to the seller’s location where we arrived at a very beautiful townhouse. Mama cat had the run of the house, while her kittens were kept in a special area of the basement.

Don’t think of a basement as a dark gloomy place, this basement was luxuriously painted and furnished, fit for a family to live in. In Europe basements are nothing more than places where in the olden days coals and firewood was kept, and where today extra groceries are stored. Basements are often also places where a variety of junk is kept. Things no longer wanted in the house, but too good to throw away. In Canada this is quite different. A finished basement holds a living room and one or two bedrooms, a fully equipped kitchen, and bathroom. It's not unusual for homeowners to occupy the ground floor and first floor of their house, while renting out the basement to a single man or woman, or a family.

When we met Sonsie it was love at first sight. An adorable white, fluffy kitten, which as the owner explained is from the Turkish angora breed. She looked at us with her round blue eyes over an adorable pink little nose.

I would have liked nothing better than to pet mama, and tell her we would take good care of her baby, but she was too shy to come forward and meet us. I felt rather sorry for her and wondered how she felt seeing her kittens being taken away. Do cats have feelings the way humans do? I hope not or mama cat will be heartbroken when all her kittens have gone to their new home.

Her owner asked us to keep in touch with pictures and videos, and we, of course, are more than happy to oblige. We like nothing better than documenting how Sonsie grow up and sharing these images with him and on social media.

In the Uber on the way home, Sonsie was lifted out of her carries and placed upon Dieter’s lap. She immediately snuggled up in his arms and slept all the way home.

Once home it was time to make introduction … Sonsie, meet Holly, Halley, Greyson and Nic. One they came to take a look and had a sniff.

While the little one had something to eat and drink, they crew came for another look, clearly curious who this newcomer was. Holly hissed at it, Halley seemed wary, Greyson was downright scared, but Nic immediately made friends. Where Sonsie goes, he goes. When he touches her, he’s ever so gently. Like he’s dealing with something that’s made of porcelain.

I have no doubt that in due time they all will come around to love Sonsie, they just need to get used to her. It’s normal that Nic shows the most interest, being just over a year old, he’s a big kitten himself.

As Sonsie grows up, there will, no doubt be lots more pictures and videos, not to mention stories about her adventures.
