This Time, Yaddle Says "YES!"
July 17, 2025 Anyone who has been reading my stories for a while knows that I am a preservation breeder of Toy Fox Terriers and Teddy Roosevelt Terriers. Some of you might remember that last year, starting in March, I had made plans to breed my precious Yaddle. I left her with "Mama Kathleen" in Texas after she and I attended the United Dog Owners Group (UKC) show in Longview. As soon as she came into heat, a mutual friend and Teddy breeder was going to bring her stud to Kathleen's place and he and Yaddle would, um, jump the broom, so to speak. Unfortunately, few activities have such a high plan failure rate as dog breeding. The tryst never happened and we made alternate arrangements. And, due to that high plan failure rate, Plan B also failed to come to fruition.

Rhinoceroses, often simply called rhinos, are among the most magnificent creatures on Earth. Known for their massive size, thick skin, and iconic horn, they symbolize power, patience, and resilience. But behind this strong image lies a quiet, remarkable journey — the pregnancy and motherhood of a female rhinoceros. Understanding this journey not only deepens our respect for these creatures but also highlights the delicate balance of nature. --- A Lengthy Commitment: The Gestation Period The rhinoceros holds one of the longest gestation periods in the animal kingdom. Female rhinos carry their calves for 15 to 16 months (about 450 to 480 days), depending on the species. This lengthy pregnancy allows the calf to grow strong and develop fully within the womb, ensuring better chances of survival once born. Mating usually occurs when both the male and female are ready. Rhinos communicate readiness through body language, vocalizations, and scent marking. Once mating is successful, the female enters a slow and steady period of carrying the unborn calf. --- Changes During Pregnancy During pregnancy, a female rhino's body undergoes several changes. Her appetite increases to provide enough nourishment for both herself and the growing calf. She seeks more rest and usually isolates herself from other rhinos, especially during the final months. Despite their large size, rhinos are sensitive and protective creatures. Pregnant females become more cautious in their movement, avoiding unnecessary risks. They also prefer quieter, more secure areas with plenty of vegetation and water sources. --- The Birth of a New Life After nearly a year and a half of pregnancy, the female rhino prepares for birth. She usually finds a peaceful, soft-grounded spot in the wild where she feels safe. Rhinos typically give birth to one calf at a time, and twins are extremely rare. A newborn rhino calf can weigh between 40 to 65 kilograms (90 to 145 pounds). Within hours of birth, the calf is able to stand and begin walking. This is crucial in the wild, where mobility is essential for survival. The calf instinctively stays close to the mother, relying on her for milk, warmth, and protection. --- A Mother’s Love and Protection The bond between a mother rhino and her calf is strong and emotional. The mother nurses the baby for up to 18 months, though the calf may start nibbling on grass within a few weeks. During this time, the calf learns essential survival skills by observing the mother. Mother rhinos are highly protective. They will charge at any perceived threat, even vehicles or larger predators. This protective nature continues for about 2 to 3 years, after which the young rhino becomes independent and may leave to find its own territory. --- Challenges and Conservation Unfortunately, rhinos face many dangers — not from nature, but from humans. Poaching for their horns, habitat destruction, and illegal wildlife trade have pushed several rhino species to the brink of extinction. As a result, their reproduction rates have become even more critical to the survival of the species. Conservationists and wildlife organizations around the world are working tirelessly to protect rhinos. Many sanctuaries and reserves provide safe spaces for breeding, and scientific efforts are being made to support rhino pregnancies through monitoring and veterinary care. --- Conclusion The pregnancy life of a rhinoceros is a beautiful yet challenging journey, filled with patience, strength, and deep maternal care. From the long gestation to the nurturing of a young calf, the process reflects nature’s quiet yet powerful rhythm. Understanding and appreciating this journey helps us recognize the importance of protecting these majestic animals.
