It's been said that people that hate cats will come back as mice in their next life.
October, Is Black Cat Awareness Month
As an animal lover and advocate for black cats, I am here today to draw attention to keeping our furry friends safe. October is black cat awareness month, and I would like people to be mindful of these little guys as Halloween draws closer. The black cat has long been the center of many myths and superstitions portraying them as evil creatures. Unfortunately, these ideas place them in danger of brutalization and ritualistic sacrifices. Even in modern times, the risk potential is a threat to these animals, so I am hoping today I can debunk some of the myths that still follow the black cat making people more aware.

On a cold stormy day, this big fluffy orange tabby was found outside the office doors. Mara the general manager and cat lover couldn't let the feline suffer, so she opened the door for him. That evening Mara took him home to her family. The next day, she put up some flyers to see if anyone has lost a cat. Weeks went by with no response to the posters. At this point Mara and Jen, the owner started letting the cat stay at the office. The fur ball needed a name, so Jen came up with the name "Triskits", because of the unique shades of orange and brown. Mara bought the cat a pet bed, a special blanket, treats, and a bunch of toys. He became the main attraction to the office. Everyone came in to see the new addition to the office family. The next day, while playing with his toys, "Triskits" discovered a mouse, but the little critter escaped from his grip. That afternoon the mouse came out again and this time, crawled into Jen's purse. That evening as Jen was grabbing for her keys, to much of her surprise she grabbed the mouse's tail instead. Jen screamed and threw the rodent into the air. It fell a few inches short of Triskit's food bowl. The furry feline finally snagged the critter. then our fluffy little sidekick, became known as "The Pet Detective." Every morning "Triskits" would stake out the office, for more mice. he studied the place where the mice were coming in from. Triskits became known as the best Pet Detective in town. Everyone wanted to borrow him. So Jen, still needing him at the office, would only borrow the cat out for the weekend. Mrs. Smith came into the office on day, all frantic and needed "Triskits" help, but because there was such a big problem at her house, she asked Jen if she could borrow him longer. Jen came to a compremise and agreed for the feline to go to her house until Wednesday. During his time at Rose's house, "Triskits" caught ten mice. Since Rose Smith's son owned the paper, she wrote an article about how good The Pet Detective was at mousing. That Wednesday, after the feline's return Jen and Mara got several calls from residents and buisnesses wanting the cat to help with the mice problems. The news of the article had spread throughout the community and the nearby towns. "Triskits" had become quite famous. Jen decided to put up a good will offering in the office, to help fix things around town. the community needed new benches, picnic tables and playground equipment. Soon everyone was borrowing The Pet Detective and Jen eventually made enough money to fix everything. When the news got out to Mayor Nelson, he held a special meeting to give Triskits The Pet Detective a medal. the medal said, best Pet Detective of Marcy County. Mara and Jen were so proud, that they decided to give Triskits a different home. So every night when it was closing time, Jen agreed to take the fluffy tabby home. "Triskits was so excited and jumped into Jen's car, anxiously waiting his new house. Not that he didn't like it at the office, but he wanted more room to explore. When he got to Jen's, he ran up and down the stairs, slid across the shiny hardwood floors and found his very own window, right in the living room, facing the bird feeder. "Triskits" was very much at home. At night, after playing, The Pet Detective needed his rest and curled up in a ball on Jen's bed and fell asleep. Although Jen lived alone, she loved the company of her friend. The next day, Jen was ready to go back to work and to much of her surprise, "Triskits" was waiting at the door, ready to go for a ride again. When our big helper got back to the office, he went back to work doing what he loved, which was keeping the building safe from any mice.

The carnival. It all started because my 6 year old daughter won a goldfish at the carnival. She named her Golden Girl, which I found brilliant because we love to watch episodes of the beloved show, and, well, she was naming a goldfish! The next morning, Golden Girl was floating at the top of the bowl, and I had to have my first conversation with my daughter, Savannah Grace, about Heaven. I remembered an episode of The Cosby Show where they had a funeral for Rudy's goldfish. After watching it on youtube, Savannah seemed to understand that sometimes this might happen to a little girl's pet goldfish. We then had our own fish funeral. That seemed to make her feel a little better.

I must say, since the beginning of Last year, working from home has been a drastic change in many lives. But, when you have a great furry friend, that truly helps to make the transition process, very relaxing in the most comforting ways. I am telling you I do love my furry friend. May I introduce the one and only Nicademus The Empawyee of the month, The Don. He answers to both names. He is non-judgmental, loving, very attentive, very soft, and seems to listen to what I have to say. It is so easy to get work done around him. Even though, he does the weirdest things through out the day, every day. He will always be my Empawyee Of the Month.

It was the kind of book store everyone imagines when they think of an Independent book seller. The same kind of quaint mom and pop feeling in You've Got Mail but bigger. Shelves handcrafted by the local carpenter holding the sectioned books in categories and alphabetized by title in some areas then switching to author in others; vintage tables with curvy carved legs holding stacks and stacks of coffee table books and bestsellers and featured items or remainders. The second floor was filled with soft leather couches and comfy chairs inviting you to not just linger....but read.

During my day job, I have a human manager. But at night, for my preferred job of Aspiring Author, I have two managers, both of the feline variety. When I adopted Frodo and Pepsi as litter mates, I assumed that I would be the manager of their lives. But I was clearly mistaken, for even as wee babes, they were the ones who were managing me. For hours, they requested my constant facilitation of playtime. This usually involved a wand toy and a tunnel, and they would persist in so far as even dragging the wand to me at all hours of the day and night. Today, this still remains a task that they require daily.

Chelsea appeared in my life unexpectedly - well, almost unexpectedly. I had unwelcome guests squatting at my apartment for a few months, and I needed someone to get rid of them. I'm talking about mice if that wasn't clear. Do you know how upsetting it is when you're a clean person who sorts food waste and recycling, and you still get rodents? Thank Godness it was only a few of them, and they made appearances rarely; having that said, I'm terrified of mice, and they turned my life into a living Hell.

In the midst of a blustering October, I felt myself drawn to the website of the local animal shelter. Typically, I can’t bear to scroll through without the intent to adopt. But this particular day something pulled at me to visit the website. I jumped online and found myself on the adoptable cats page. Although I already had my wonderful tom cat, Cricket, a voice inside whispered that I needed something more. I scrolled through the many adoptable pets that tugged at my heart strings until I landed upon an old and grey cat. “Sir Meows a Lot” it said. His big glowing eyes looked deep into mine and I knew I was hooked.

Dear Guinness, I must apologize to you. I saw that look of terror on your face tonight, and I know you’re traumatized right now. After almost 14 years together, I know you all too well.

A little background as to how Stella and I met: I was fortunate enough to grow up with a family dog, and while a dog may be man's best friend, to an only child, they can sort of eventually feel like a furry little sibling.

April 16, 2017 Easter Sunday, this was the day my dad passed and all I could do was stand there and watch. He had come home from the hospital and was placed into hospice after battling with COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) and memory loss. A man of old, my father had always been strong and protective, a leader, my hero; how fragile he seemed laying there taking his last labored breaths.

My art studio is small and well used. It is just a little converted bedroom with an open walk in closet in the back of my home. One floor to ceiling window looks out on a pocket of a wooded forest with a little lake that I can see through a pattern of oak and pine trees. Occasionally a turkey or small herd of deer will walk past my window. Out of this wooded forest is where all of my art studio cat assistants have come from. They all showed up meowing, hungry, thirsty, and sometimes pregnant and needing a trip to the vet.
