We have a long journey to get home.

Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey was released to theaters in 1993. Believing that their family has abandoned them, three pets - Shadow, Chance, and Sassy - journey through the wild to get home. On this epic journey, the animals learn about courage, trust, and friendship.

I will never get tired of Homeward Bound. The story is a poignant and humorous tail (I mean, tale). Over time I have found new meaning in Homeward Bound. It captures a deep message. Appreciate what you have in life and never take anything for granted.

Shadow, Chance, and Sassy are faithful, fun-loving, and sarcastic animals. As a kid, I mainly adored the film because it was dog and cat based. I love animals! Until a few years ago, their friendship caught my attention. Taking this journey helps the pets understand each other and witness what the world is all about.

Each animal reflects a different moral. Chance’s story reflects growth. He comes to appreciate the little things in life. Shadow’s instincts are incredibly inspiring. In this moving dialogue Shadow beautifully conveys a dog’s responsibility to love and protect their owners. And Sassy, while yes she is sassy like her name, is vigilant and will never let anyone down.

As the voices of the animals, Michael J. Fox, Sally Field, and the late Don Ameche did an outstanding job. They bore the right emotions just through their voices and connected to their characters. As always, Fox delivered great energy and even added in his own adlibs.

One of my favorite aspects of this film is how the animals don’t talk physically. Instead, dialogue happens in their head and their mouths don’t move. I wish talking animal movies didn’t turn to CGI because it ruins the realism of the film.

In a separate story arc of the film, the family of the pets works on their own dynamic. Losing pets is hard on each member, especially the kids. Robert Hays, Kim Griest, Benj Thall, Veronica Lauren, and Kevin Chevalia do a nice job with the build-up of their characters. They each get a moment to shine. Be grateful for what you have.

Capturing stunning locations of the mountain, rivers, woods, and the beautiful skyline, the cinematography of Homeward Bound is not talked about enough. The scenery is stunning. I feel like I am also a member of this journey.

The dedication that the crew took to protect the animals is a story to commemorate. For shots that were deemed too risky to film, specifically involving scenes with dangerous animals, crew members took it to their devices to arrange creative edits. The animals were directed very well running through the wild.

Duwayne Dunham’s direction brought a heartwarming film about a pet’s devotion. He chose to make the film as realistically as he could. And he kept all the animals safe. The moral dispatched in Homeward Bound is a beautiful message that evokes love from pets.

Animals change your life. If you’re looking for something to be thankful for, give your pet a hug. Pets add value to our lives. Love from our pets is a gift to treasure forever. It makes me appreciate the love from my dog all the more. Homeward Bound is a powerful story that will forever live on the message of a dog’s purpose.

I always tear up whenever I watch Homeward Bound. The ending is one of the most heartwarming endings that you will ever see. I suggest that you give it a watch if you have not seen it. Snuggle up with your furry friend and enjoy the adventure.
