Harriet and Her Snowman

a whimsical winter tale

With one ear up and one ear down

and a heart-stamped nose above that cute little frown,

Harriet watched from the window as the fresh snow powdered everything in sight.

Icicles dripped down from the roof, branches became magical crystal covered limbs, and the dull, dead grass was transformed into a sparkling white blanket begging for fresh footprints.

The air was crisp but not too cold. The snow was falling, but the sun kept shining. It was the perfect day to explore the fresh winter wonderland before it melted. Harriet jumped down from the couch and put on her winter hat. As she stepped out into the snow, she felt the frozen flakes cling to her fur. Her feet were now buried, so she had to hop a little harder than usual through the yard.

The snow chilled her nose,

It clung to her toes!

She hopped through piles

And played for miles!

She rolled snowballs

And licked icicles!

Harriet felt at home in the snow,

Finding freezing fun everywhere she’d go.

Her snow day was only missing one thing—someone to share it with.

While in the snow she was leaping,

The rest of the world was still sleeping.

But she wanted a friend

Before the snow came to an end.

With one ear up and one ear down

and a heart-stamped nose above that cute little frown,

She realized where she could find a friend.

She hopped home for a scarf, another hat, and a paw-full of buttons. She snuck into the vegetable drawer and carefully carried two carrots outside, one for her and one for her friend.

She gathered branches and pebbles and mountains of snow. Digging and rolling and patting until she had three perfectly round snowballs, each a different size.

Harriet slowly stacked the snowballs on top of each other, arranging them from largest to smallest. She climbed up to the smallest snowball and placed the hat on top. She stuck on the pebbled eyes, making sure to save a few pebbles for the smile. Next Harriet carried the carrot nose, trying as hard as she could not to nibble on the end, and placed it just above the smile.. She then placed the branches on either side of the middle snowball and lined buttons down the front. The final touch was wrapping the scarf tightly around her snowman to keep him warm.

Harriet stepped back and stared in awe at her new found friend. Eventually the rest of her friends would wake up, and she couldn’t wait to show them what she’d built. She loved being around others more than anything. Laughing, playing, exploring, and cuddling with her friends and family meant the world to her.

Sometimes it was hard to wait for them to wake up. She wanted to always be around others, but something felt different today.

The snow fell so peacefully. The wind whispered so pleasantly.

Harriet felt content to just enjoy this winter morning with her snowman. She was still excited to show off her hard work, but that could wait a little longer. It's not often that the world seems this peaceful. Soon enough, her big strong ears would hear the cars driving, feet walking, voices laughing, and music playing. For now, she decided to enjoy the quiet calm of just her and her snowman.

With one ear up and one ear down

and a heart-stamped nose above that cute little frown,

Harriet munched her carrot and watched the snowflakes fall beside her new frosty friend.
