Hammy performs Saltburn - by Author

Why am I showing you this? I'm exploring Hammy's acting talents.

I know, people on social media telling you how cute their pets are, can be the most boring topic ever.

I won't tell you how cute my hamster is, so don't worry.

(if you do get bored, go down to the comment section and give your opinion on Saltburn)

Can Hamsters be Vampires?

Now back to my new pet. There is something wrong with it.

We were hoping for a cuddly one, one that acts like a guinea pig and chirps softly while hold it while watching TV.

Or a loveable dog that rests its head on your thigh, and contentedly falls asleep.

"Hammy" neither cuddles, chirps, nor snuggles.

He prefers to eat, sleep, and bite the hand that feeds him.

He's very aggressive and his bites hurt.

Rethinking the joys of pet ownership

As I'm an optimist, I search for seeds of hope in the fields of despair:

  • Hammy jumps for joy when I return home and wants to play (no one else has done that for a while).
  • Likes to eat sunflower seeds out of my fingers (ditto).
  • Is a potential gold mine of content creation.

Our Hamster's Acting Talents

His habit of attacking the cameraman could make for interesting watching, of the sort that's popular on TikTok.

So, over the weekend, I rearranged his playpen, got the camera out, and watched what happened:

What is he doing?!

My thoughts immediately went to the film Cocaine Bear (a vapid but fun film in the vein of Dumb and Dumber. It's so dumb, it's fun).

Do we have a possible "Cocaine Hamster" on our hands?

Was cocaine smuggled inside of the bag of Timothy Hay we purchased. But then, why was it on sale for $6.24?

After extensive googling, it becomes clear Timothy Hay is nothing like cocaine or even catnip for hamsters.

A Future Acting Career (on TikTok)

Young people everywhere have been copying Saltburn's final dance scene.

They mostly perform with their clothes on.

Our hamster has the advantage of being talented in performing in his birthday suit.

Final scene: No Problem✅

Other Scenes

1. Could 'Hammy' pretend his hamster wheel is broken, in order to infiltrate a family with a much bigger home?

Yes.✅

Hamster's definitely have cage envy.

2. Heavy petting scenes?

Those would be easy. ✅

3. The Grave scene?

Covered. ✅

4. Down the Drain.

Do you really think hamsters would mind drinking out of a bathtub? ✅

(but #yuck #eww)

5. Witty conversation, subtle body language, and clever manipulation.

With my actors, this might be difficult. ❌

Now, back to the hamster wheel of content creation...

I asked AI to explain the history of hamsters as pets, a story which began in 1939, when biologist Israel Aharoni captured a small group of hamsters in the wild in Syria.

[TW: AI CONTENT AHEAD]

Israel Aharoni's pivotal role in introducing hamsters to the Western world, particularly in America, cannot be overstated. In 1939, a small group of hamsters captured by Aharoni was sent to the United States for further study, marking the beginning of the widespread popularity of hamsters as pets in America.

Upon their arrival in the United States, these captivating creatures quickly captured the hearts of pet enthusiasts and animal lovers alike. Their endearing nature, low maintenance requirements, and adorable appearance made them an instant hit. The arrival of these hamsters sparked a surge of interest in keeping them as pets, and they soon became a common sight in households across the country.

The establishment of breeding programs and the subsequent availability of hamsters in pet stores further fueled their popularity. The appeal of these small rodents extended beyond just being pets for children; adults also found joy in caring for and observing these charming animals. Their gentle demeanor and unique behaviors endeared them to people of all ages, solidifying their status as beloved pets.

As their popularity grew, different breeds of hamsters, such as the Syrian (or golden) hamster, dwarf hamsters, and Chinese hamsters, became widely available in the American pet market. Their availability in various coat colors and patterns added to their allure, offering prospective owners a wide selection to choose from.

Hamsters also made their mark in popular culture, featuring in children's literature, cartoons, and even as characters in movies and television shows. Their widespread appeal led to an increase in educational resources and information about their care and well-being, further cementing their place as cherished pets in American households.

Today, hamsters continue to be popular pets in America, with a dedicated community of owners and enthusiasts who appreciate these small creatures for their unique personalities and endearing traits. Israel Aharoni's contribution to introducing hamsters as pets in America has left a lasting legacy, shaping the lives of countless individuals who have found joy and companionship in these delightful animals.
