GreyFriars Bobby

He sat on his masters grave for 14 years

In eighteen fifty gardener John Gray

Moved to Edinburgh with wife and son

Unable to find work during the day

He took a job as a night watchman

He needed company through the night

So kept a Skye Terrier at his side

He and Bobby were a regular sight

A truly great friendship personified

Years outside had taken its toll on John

Treated by the police surgeon for TB

Just a few months later John's life was done

Buried in Greyfriars to the distress of Bobby

The dog wouldn't leave his master's graveside

Though the caretaker and keeper tried hard

Through Summer and Winter the dog lay and cried

His only home was now Greyfriars kirkyard

The softhearted caretaker built him a home

With two tablestones placed at the graveside

Bobby settled there, the city he'd comb

And there for years he'd happily reside

His fame quickly spread throughout the old town

People would gather and wait for one o clock

That's when Bobby would leave, go and sit down

Get fed at the coffee house where crowds would flock

He was treated well at his master's old place

Where they were both always known to frequent

Long forgotten footsteps the dog would re-trace

where he and his master were once content

Edinburgh people took good care of him

As he lay on the grave for fourteen years

Then he ailed in old age, Eyes became dim

And lots of Scottish folk shed lots of tears

A Fountain was erected with Bobby above

A suitable tribute to man's best friend

To this faithful dog who'd lived a life of love

And stayed with his master right to the end.
