We love our dogs and cats. They are a part of our family to the point where we want to always do what is best for them and take good care of them. We will even go as far as to look for home remedies for itchy dogs or cats from issues such as fleas because we want to give them a natural alternative to chemicals that can be harmful to them. After all, these are our faithful loving companions. But there are some things about our furry little friends that we may not be aware, so here are some fun facts that could give us new insights into them.

Dogs have a keener sense of smell & hearing

This is no doubt why dogs are used in search and rescue teams along with police units. Dogs have actually around 14 times more scent cells than human beings and around four more than their feline opposite, the cat. In fact, a dog's sense of smell is 1,000 times keener than the average human being. Dogs also have a keener sense of hearing than humans and can hear even the quietist of sounds.

Dogs and cats do see colors

A common misconception is that both these furry friends only see in black and white. But it turns out they do differentiate some colors, just not all the ones that humans beings do. Dogs can see shades of blue, yellow and grey. Cats, on the other hand, are only capable of seeing shades in blue and green.

Cats seem to only meow at humans

It turns out that cats have their own way of communicating with their human owner, and it's through their meow. If you own more than one cat, take the time to study how they seem to communicate with each other. Cats seldom if ever meow at other cats; they either hiss or use a low pitch gurgling sound to communicate with each other.

Most popular breed of dog and why

There are several different breeds of dog, but for years now the most popular has been the Labrador, and with good reason. Not only is this dog loving and gentle in nature, it can also be easy to train. That is why it has started to be used more like a service dog for those with disabilities. The dog is also gentle with young children and can be quite loyal to its owners, to the point where despite being gentle, it will still be a good watchdog.

Cats are right-pawed or left-pawed

This is something that a cat shares in common with human beings. A cat either favors his front right paw or his left paw when extending a paw out.

Cats don't sweat but dogs do

Although cats tend not to like extreme heat, they don't sweat. Why? Because it turns out that cats don't have sweat glands as humans and dogs do. But contrary to popular belief, dogs don't sweat by salivating, but instead, they sweat through the pads of their feet.

Dogs and cats know when we are mad

Some think that our furry friends don't understand us, but there is research that proves otherwise. Not only will our pets respond to their given name, but they know when our tone of voice changes. A dog or cat doesn't like it when we are yelling, and tend to run off. That is why is always a good idea to watch your tone around your pet and to only use a louder tone when scolding them to let them know they are in trouble.

These are just some fun facts about our furry friends that maybe you may not have been aware of. Turns out that this is just scratching the surface of all the facts that are out there. So, the next time you happen to be out online researching ways to care for your beloved pet, maybe also take the time to find out some more facts about them. This will certainly help give your more of an understanding of your pet in general.
