A large number of dog owners today will tell you that they love their dogs, but would rather have them in the back garden bathing in the lake every day!

This would suggest to me that they have neither given their dogs sufficient attention, nor taken the time to ensure that the dog is well contained and is not likely to run away.

Even more worryingly is the fact that a number of dogs will escape and be at large, either to fight with other dogs, or to attack other people.

Although it is a sad fact that some dogs do end up wandering. Absolutely every dog will at one time or another leave his pen or home and wandering is not a behaviour that a dog should engage in.

A dog wandering is not only likely to get the run of the street and most certainly can cause an accident.

In addition dogs that are wandering lost and aimlessly around looking for something may become so confused and scared that they will leave their pen and return to the car without even slowing down to catch their scent, leading inevitably to an accident waiting to happen.

To ensure that you never end up with a dog taking off when out walking, consider the following points:

And finally...

From personal experience I know that a happy dog is a trained dog and every owner should take the time to train their dog. It is a good rule of thumb to say that a well-trained dog will require fewer possessions.

In other words a well-trained dog is less likely to end up with things he/she shouldn't have, and will be a significantly more content dog.

Whenever you are training your dog there will naturally be days when you will not see any sign of progress. A thing to increase during this time is the attention you give your dog and the amount of effort you put into the training.

If your dog warms up, you can move on to working on different behaviours and potentially build up your dogs endurance. A well-trained dog will willingly and enthusiastically do things for you, even when you've had a tough week.

Obviously some dogs that seem very trainable may lack interest in doing things for you simply because they are not motivated by the things that you want them to do.

In this case you will need to Tools to keep them interested. Such as toys, treats or even games. In the same way if your dog doesn't respond to the things you want from them then you will need to try different things. In this case examination of the way you work with your dog will be the most important.

The initial steps will be to show the dog what things they enjoy doing, and then to increase the frequency of these activities. If your dog doesn't respond to the things you want from them then you will need to increase your efforts.

The other thing is to try a number of different things. This way you can diversify your efforts and you will be sure to get to the optimum level of performance from your dog.

Having a dog can be a rewarding part of life, and is a fantastic way for people to find a little extra time to relax and play with their dog.

Basically you want to use the time that you spend with your dog to establish a good level of communication and well defined roles with your dog.

This makes it easier for you to set up clear boundaries when it comes to their behaviour and makes it easier for them to understand what is expected from them. A clear minded dog is a happy dog, and has a happy owner.
