5 Reasons Cats are Better Than Dogs

A Case for Feline Superiority

Ah, yes. Here were are again about to once again tackle a debate as old as the universe itself. Some people would have you believe that your affinity for either household companion is dependant on a number of subjective factors like personal preference, lifestyle, income, etc. But those people are plebs who probably pour their cereal in after their milk.

Allow me to take you into my dependable, yet slightly clammy hands and regale you with a few reasons of why our beloved feline friends reign supreme in the battle of ‘Cat vs Dog’.

1. Cats Don’t Need Walks

For the safety of anyone in the immediate area and the hound itself, a dog must be attended when it takes its MULTIPLE walks per day. Being accosted in the wee hours in the morning while you try to get in your morning speed walking session by Rufus is less than ideal. And leaving Rufus to his own devices would more than likely end in him chasing the wheel of a MACK truck into the next state.

But cats? When was the last time you saw a cat on a harness in the dead of winter with its owner trotting behind eagerly waiting to pick up warm turds? Not in this parallel universe that’s for sure. Cats are perfectly content lounging around the house all day. In fact, most cats would rather sleep than go outside and expose themselves to the dangers of the great outdoors.

This means that as a cat owner, you won’t have to brave the cold, rain, or heat to take your furry friend for a walk. You can just sit back and let your cat do its own thing while you enjoy a nice cup of coffee (or liquor, no judgment here).

2. Cats Don’t Bark (Unless They Want To)

Allow me to set the scene for you. It’s 11:30 pm. You’ve finally decided to wind down and relax after a long Netflix binge session. When all of a sudden your misophonia is triggered by the wall shaking howl of a beast whose kill instinct has been activated by its own tail. Dogs are known for barking at everything and anything — the mailman, the neighbors, a leaf blowing in the wind. But cats? They’re much more selective with their vocalizations. In fact, cats only meow when they want something (usually food), and they’ll only make other noises if they’re feeling threatened or in heat.

This means that as a cat owner, you won’t have to deal with the constant barking and howling that comes with owning a dog. You can enjoy a peaceful and quiet home, and your neighbors will thank you for it.

3. Cats are Low-Maintenance

Dogs need a ridiculous amount of attention and care, including daily walks, feeding, grooming, and training. Did I already mention having to leave the comfort of you home in all sorts of weather to walk Old Yeller morning, noon and night? Yeah… that’s a hard pass.

With cats, you get the convenience of self-sufficiency. They groom themselves, they’re litter trained, and they don’t need nearly as much constant doting as dogs do. Just thinking about all of that effort and exertion makes me want to take a nap… and then drive to the pet store to buy a cat.

Cats truly are the perfect pets for busy people who don’t have the time or the desire to put in the required to care for a dog. You can still give your cat love and affection when you have time, but you won’t have to worry about meeting its every need like you would with a dog.

4. Cats are More Adaptable

And then there’s the issue of space. While dogs need a lot of space to run and play, cats are much more adaptable to small spaces. I’m a firm believer in dogs not being suitable for apartment buildings but that’s a pet peeve to be discussed another day.

Cats aren’t only better suited for smaller spaces (i.e. see r/catsareliquid), they absolutely thrive in apartments or small homes as long as they have plenty of toys, scratching posts, and a cosy bed to curl up in. No fuss no muss.

5. Cats Have Cooler Toys

So, you have you standard arsenal of dog toys:

  • balls
  • chew toys
  • bone — pretty boring if we’re being honest.

Cats, on the other hand, have all sorts of cool toys to keep them entertained, including laser pointers, feather wands, automated mice — you name it. I’ve seen some cat toys and thought to myself, ‘I would definitely buy that for myself or for my friend’s 8 year old kid.’ The intricacy in some of these contraptions is a testament to the overall intelligence of the average cat in comparison to dogs. A simple game of fetch is not gonna cut it most of the time. Or for anyone on a budget just grab a loose feather or string from your jacket and voila! Hours of wholesome entertainment for Sir Fluffikins III. You can just sit back and watch your cat go crazy with its toys while you relax on the couch. Do you understand how much of a win that is?

In conclusion, cats are the ultimate pets. They’re low-maintenance, quiet, adaptable to small spaces, and they have cooler toys. So the next time you’re considering adding a furry friend to your family, don’t forget to consider the many benefits of adopting a cat. So go ahead, embrace your inner cat lady (or man) and bring home a feline friend. You won’t regret it!

The awful smell... dogs smell almost immediately after you wash them. Cats are self-cleaning! I enjoy this, thank you.
