There are many technological security systems out there to keep your home safe. Hi-tech alarm systems, security gates and underfloor safes can be used to protect a home and possessions. Yet many people still opt for dogs as the more traditional method of protecting their property. Combining a pet with protection is certainly nothing new, and in this article, we look at the dog as an option and consider the best breeds out there for different situations.

Do you Need a Dog for Protection?

As well as being man’s best friend and the nation’s favourite pet, dogs are utilised for several other purposes. Alongside their usage in the police force and the military, our furry friends are also utilised as assistance dogs, helping the blind or those who need extra help. Different dogs of course, specialise in different things; Labradors for example, are the perfect guide dog. Gentle, loyal, and hyper intelligent, their work allows their owners to go about their day in a way they would otherwise be unable to.

German Shepherd

Popular as a pet, the German Shepherd is one of the most common options for a dog offering protection to a home. The German Shepherd has a history of being used as military and police dogs, as well as being a popular pet for many. Their high level of intelligence, as well as their loyalty, strength and fitness make them fantastic options for police dogs, and a strong option for home protection. A German Shepherd is quick to learn commands from owners, important if the dog is to be a pet as well as protection, particularly in the case of a family with children.

Doberman

Another popular option is the Doberman. Weighing up to 45kg, this breed has often unfairly received the reputation as being a vicious, unfriendly dog. In fact, the Doberman is a loving, sensitive dog, but also one of the bravest, strongest breeds available. Their imposing size, fierce appearance and their bravery make them a popular choice for protecting a property. Trained Dobermans can make an excellent family pet due to their loyalty and intelligence. In addition, their fantastic speed makes them a great choice for protecting a large area – they would require very little time to confront an intruder.

Rottweiler

An archetypal guard dog, the Rottweiler is short-haired, dark in colour and has a lifespan of up to around 10 years. With the right training, this breed will become an excellent dog for protecting both families and properties, and once it builds your trust, is highly affectionate and friendly. A key feature of the Rottweiler is that until it is shown, or understands that you pose no threat, it will not trust you. With that in mind, any unwelcome visitors to your home or property should be aware. Rottweilers will require extensive exercise and should be taken on by experienced dog owners. While they can be extremely affectionate, and protect families like almost no other dog, they require a calm owner, lots of attention and exercise.

Great Dane

Here is a giant that needs no introduction. One of the largest breeds of dog, the Great Dane is a popular choice as both a pet and protection dog, particularly among those who want a dog to offer protection to their family. Their imposing size makes them stand out and would make anyone think twice about confronting them, but they also have other characteristics that make them a strong contender for a protective dog. Their patience, their personality and their intelligence make them an excellent all-round dog, and there are a few things you should know if you are bringing a Great Dane into your home of property

They are obviously, by nature, enormous. An adult Great Dane can measure anything up to 86cm tall, so they are going to need a lot of space – and a lot of exercise. They are extremely calm in nature, making them an excellent choice for families with young children, despite their large size, and this enables them to also remain calm in a situation of emergency. With the right training they will alert you when a situation arises. While not as naturally aggressive as some dogs, they are playful and friendly by nature, should their appearance not be enough to ward off an intruder they sure know when and how to bring out their aggressive side. A Great Dane will protect a home and a family and is a popular dog for good reason.
