3 Reasons why you should think twice before getting a puppy.

Are you ready for this responsibility?

So you're thinking about getting a dog huh? To go one step further, you want to get a puppy. Seeing puppies on commercials or seeing them as you walk past a stranger on street makes you realize just how cute or how adorable those little guys are. And that's true! I think they are cuter than newborn babies! Just like newborns, however, they are a lot of work that requires patience, maintenance, and a whole lot of patience! Before you think about snagging one of those guys from a pound or something, let me give you a few reasons (3) why you should take a little more time to think about your decision.

1. I hope your ready to replace some items

Puppies are clumsy and curious. They are new to a lot of things in the world and they don't know what to avoid and what's okay to walk on or walkthrough. This means that if you have a vase on a shelf, a gaming console on a desk, or maybe dinner food on the dinner table, a puppy might do some investigating (whether it was intentional or not) and bump into that shelf or attempt to jump onto that dinner table. I don't know about you, but that would not make me a happy camper if I were to see my dinner ruined or my 50$ vase broken. Having done something like this, the puppy can also be in danger of stepping on a piece of broken glass! You would have to make sure to keep a close eye on the puppy at all times to reduce the amount of destruction they could cause.

2. Resolve and toilet paper will become your best friend

Remember when I said you might have to replace a broken vase? Well now you might have to replace a box or just wash some clothes as puppies use the bathroom and they do it a lot! Unlike a baby, you can't just slap a diaper onto a puppy and just replace it when it's dirty (or maybe you could but that would cause some discomfort and some problems when trying to potty train them outside later in their life). Puppies have to go outside a lot throughout the day (can be as much as once every 2 hours) unless you want to spend every 2 hours cleaning urine off a carpet you just shampooed! This would be a frequent activity that you would have to do at least once every day. Remember, that month old puppy is still not used to everything in the world, so they don't know how to control their blatter and they don't know that they should wait until they are taken outside to do their business. I hope you have that resolve bottle and some toilet paper or old cloths nearby as your new puppy will do their business on any and everything.

3. Everything is a chew toy and that includes you

If you haven't noticed by now, puppies have a bad habit of messing with things that you don't want them to mess with. Just like babies, every puppy goes through a teething phase where they feel the need to chew on something. You can get your puppy all the squeak toys and tennis balls you want, but for some reason, it's like puppies don't want to chew on what they're supposed to chew on and instead, chew on things you know they shouldn't. If you have a vacuum cleaner, a tv, a tv remote, or if you have something with a cord attached to it, it's all fair game to that puppy. Depending on what kind of puppy that is, they will chew through it if they are not stopped in time. Even when you try to stop them, they might see it like your trying to play and they will try to chew on you next! This will happen a lot of times as puppies have a bunch of energy and have to exert that energy in some way shape or form.

Now even though I outlined some things that might make you reconsider if you should get a puppy, they are still wonderful companions to have. I just want you to know that they still are animals that have to be watched closely and taken care of properly or they can become a massive headache for you. The next time you watch them on a commercial or walk past someone on the street with one, just remember that they are more than that cute little face and puppy dog eyes.
