Known for their distinctive fluffy lion-like appearance, Chow Chow’s are astonishingly one of the oldest dog breeds, dating back to ancient Asia. Here are some things you should know and consider before taking in this beautiful breed:

1) Aloof Pups

Chows have been known to have a cat-like nature, meaning they could be a bit standoffish and aren’t the most sociable. This doesn't make them any less of a lovable furry companion, especially with proper training, but they do enjoy their space and are very independent/reserved creatures.

2) Training Ain’t Easy

These pups don't have the strong desire to please their masters and can be a bit stubborn compared to other breeds like the Golden Retriever. Often temperament can be misunderstood and many people mistakenly believe that Chows are vicious. This is far from the truth, but it's important to establish dominance and proper training while young as they have stern personalities.

3) The Chow Walk

The Chow walk is referred to as “stilted,” meaning a stiff-legged way of moving due to their back-legs being straight. So when you see them out walking on the street, you can tell your friends, “that’s how they’re supposed to walk.”

4) Extreme Loyalty

Chows are typically a one-person dog that bonds most closely to their owner and is quite wary of everyone else. Chows are extremely protective of their loved ones and tend to usually develop strong bonds with one or two members in the family. They can be a bit selective with their company, but prove loyalty to those they trust.

5) Not Hypoallergenic

Chows are not hypoallergenic. This is definitely something important to take into consideration when looking to adopt, as the Chow breed is a heavy shedder.

6) Excellent Watchdog

Once referred to as war dogs, Chow Chows are formidable hunting and guard dogs that have been around since basically forever.

7) Unique Features

Beyond their adorable teddy bear-like appearance, Chows are known for having blue-black tongues and two extra teeth added to their grin.

8) Extensive Grooming

Grooming is one of the main things that takes dedication with owning this canine. Brushing and grooming will be required at least 20 minutes, 3 times a week to maintain healthy hair and prevent insects or infection.

9) Medium-sized to Large Breed

Chows Chows are most commonly anywhere from 50 - 70 lbs, but have been reported to be as big as 100 lbs.

10) Lazy Tendencies

Generally not considered high-maintenance (beyond grooming), Chows can actually become quite lazy if they aren’t regularly exercised. Studies have shown Chows to be less active than most breeds by more than 50%. Daily walks are important with these pups.

11) Life expectancy

We all know our furry friends cannot live forever, so it is important that we understand the perils of old age. Chow Chows average life expectancy is 8-15 years and with regular vet visits and good care, who knows how much this can be surpassed!

12) Very smart

Chows are a very intelligent breed. However due to their stubbornness, these unique dogs do not always choose to show off their canine intelligence.

13) Water Distance

Because of their uniquely fluffy “double coat,” it can prove a hazard in water. It’s best to refrain Chow Chows from deep waters to keep them safe.

These dogs are considered to be one of the most ancient amongst modern breeds. Chow Chow’s quirky characteristics and undeniable loyalty set them apart from their peers. They are great companions and are generally low maintenance (beyond grooming). Now that you know the facts, it's up to you to see if a Chow Chow can be a good companion for you!
