Jockstrap

A jockstrap is a genital protective sports gear designed for the male body, commonly known as a "jock".

It consists of an elastic waistband with a support pouch for the genitalia and two elastic straps attached to the base of the pouch and to the left and right sides of the waistband at the hip. The pouch is sometimes fitted with a pocket to hold an impact resistant cup to protect the testicles and penis from injury.

The garment was first designed for bike-riding messengers and delivery men, or 'bike jockeys'. The Bike Jockey Strap was the first jockstrap manufactured in the United States in 1874.

C. F. Bennett from the Chicago sporting goods company, Sharp & Smith, invented the jockstrap in 1874 to provide comfort and support for bicycle jockeys. The original incarnation of the jockstrap resembled a thong, as it featured a strap that went between the buttocks. The Bike Jockey Strap was patented in 1897 and was mass-produced.

Other uses for a medical jockstrap would be after a vasectomy or scrotoplasty surgery.

Your doctor can prescribe a jockstrap and most health insurances will cover the cost. Some medical jockstraps are constructed with an ice pouch if icing is necessary.
