The ceremonies start with Panda Kaal Muhurutham, a ceremony that takes place before the wedding. In the ceremony, the families of the bride and the groom worship god for a peaceful, uninterrupted, and happy wedding.

Sumangali Prarthanai - A Puja for the Married Women

Sumanglis has referred to the females that are blessed with a pleasant married life. In Sumangli Prarthana, around 3, 5, 7, or 9 Sumangli women are known as. The ladies are treated to real south Indian food. The bride-to-be hunt is for their blessings to have a fruitful married life ahead.

Pallikai Thellichal

In this ceremony, nine different kinds of grains along with curd get mixed. The mixture is stored in the earthen pots. After that, the pots are immersed in the water to give food to the fish. The ritual is considered lucky for the starting of the new life of the couple.

Naandi Shrardham

10 Brahmins are invited to Nandi Shardam. They are feasted with fruits, sweets, paan-supari, coconut, flowers, etc. The feast is organized to bring blessings to the couples.

Nichayathartham

Nichayathartham or engagement in Tamil where the couple gets formally engaged and the real ritual of the wedding starts.

Lagna Pathirikai

In Tamil, Lagna Pathirikai is a wedding invitation. After the process of the engagement, the wedding date is finalized and the wedding invitations are sent to the guests.

Mangala Snaanam (purifying bath)

Mangala Snanam is referred to the purification bath. Bride and groom take bath before they go on ahead with the rituals of the wedding. Before Mangala Snanam, Kumkum, Haldi, and oil are applied on the skin of the groom and the bride.

Kashi Yatra

It is one of the most interesting ceremonies and an important part of Tamil weddings. Here, in the ritual, the groom acts to leave the ceremonies. The bride’s father asks the groom to stop and let his daughter marry.

Pada Puja

Here, in the ritual, the bride’s mother washes the feet of the groom with water. First of all, the paste of Chandan and Kumkum is first applied on the groom’s feet. Then the mother of the bride cleans his feet with water. After the process, the bride is invited to the Mandap.

Maalai Maatral

This ritual includes the exchange of garland ‘vermala’. Normally, the garland is exchanged only one time. But in Tamil matrimony, they are exchanged thrice to mark the start of the holy unity of the couple.

Kanyadaanam

'Kanyadan' or ‘Kanyadanam’ is one of the most common rituals followed in Tamil weddings. During Kanyadan, the father hands over his daughter to the Groom. The groom assures the bride’s Father that he will take care of her for the relaxation of his life.

Muhurtham and Saptapadi

After Kanyadanam, the ritual of Muhurtham takes place. Here, the groom packs Kumkum in the hair divider of the bride and ties Thaali around her neck.

Sammandhi Maryathai

In Sammandhi Maryathai both families provide each other gift and then the bride leaves her parental house.
