ZERO WASTE LIFESTYLE: THE TUMBLER PHENOMENON IN THE GENERATION Z ERA
Are you one of those people who use tumblers too?
Amidst the hustle and bustle of modern life, Generation Z is now emerging with a new spirit. One symbol of this movement is the use of tumblers, which not only function as containers for drinks but also as a symbol of high environmental awareness. Among the practical container models they choose, the tumbler stands as the main icon. Every time they fill their tumbler with a drink, they not only keep themselves hydrated but also send a strong message: change starts from small things.
More than a practical container, tumblers are now a reflection of the creativity and values upheld by this generation. From unique designs to personalized ornaments, tumblers also reflect individual personalities. On this journey, Generation Z shows that with small actions, they can create big waves of change, inspiring others to join the mission to save our beloved earth.
In recent years, Generation Z has shown a strong commitment to sustainability, and one of the main tools in this fight is the tumbler. According to data from the World Economic Forum, more than 1 million plastic bottles are used every minute worldwide, creating an urgent waste crisis. A survey shows that around 70% of young people feel better when using environmentally friendly products, including tumblers, because they feel like they are part of the solution.
In human life in the environment, it is inseparable from the use of plastic and waste. Every day and even every year, the level of waste production increases along with the pattern of human needs themselves, the negative impact of which is not only on humans but also on the environment. Waste is goods or materials that are no longer needed or used by humans. Based on data from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK), Indonesia produced 30.97 million tons of waste in 2023 (Adi Ahdiat: 2024). In this regard, waste management in Indonesia currently has a high urgency, because there are still many Indonesian people who still think that waste will not be meaningful to their lives, which in reality the problem of waste can cause natural disasters that will have a negative effect on the process of human life itself.
Generation Z is accustomed to using technology and social media in their daily lives because they already have better access, so they are also known as a generation that cares about environmental and social issues and has a more open and global view. In line with this, Generation Z prefers environmentally friendly products so that the environment around them is protected from damage and safer. Students are one of those included in Generation Z.
The use of tumblers among generation Z students reflects high environmental awareness and a commitment to sustainability, also supported by the university as evidence of efforts to reduce plastic waste by avoiding the use of disposable bottles that cause pollution. In addition, although there is an initial cost to buy a tumbler, in the long term, students should be able to save money through discounts or money off offered by stores for customers who bring their own containers, as we see in real terms when we shop at several minimarkets that are advised to bring their own shopping bags.
In addition, tumblers encourage a healthy lifestyle by allowing students to refill healthy drinks, such as water or juice, instead of sweet drinks that are often sold in plastic packaging. Tumblers are also a means of self-expression, allowing students to choose a design that reflects their personality, making it more than just a drinking utensil. The use of tumblers inspires others around them to participate in a sustainable lifestyle. When one person carries a tumbler, it can trigger their friends to do the same, creating a positive wave.
The tumbler phenomenon among Generation Z is not just a lifestyle choice but a call for an urgent and meaningful movement for the welfare of society and the environment. With every glass filled, we are not only reducing plastic waste but also investing in a healthier future. Let's take a small but significant step by joining the growing zero waste movement. By carrying a tumbler, we show that we care and are committed to being agents of change. Let's be part of this movement together; every drop we save is a step towards a better world. Join now, and be an inspiration for others to join the journey towards sustainable living.
