Why Unlimited Storage Is Making People More Disorganized

Cloud space solved one problem. It quietly created another.

By abualyaanartPublished 6 months ago • 4 min read

In the past, there were space constraints which had to make decisions.

Some decisions had to be made as to what items to keep.

Delete old photos

Remove unused apps

Organize files carefully

Stating the key points in support of the main ideas

It was inconvenient.

It did make discipline though.

Storage as if it doesn't come to an end!

Phones are equipped with hundreds of GBs.

Cloud services promise:

Unlimited photos

Automatic backups

Sync across devices

Instant access everywhere

Freedom it sounds like it.

To a certain extent, at least.

But, many even more disorganized than ever.

Since there's no limit on storage.

Because of it.

As decisions follow limits, so do decisions follow where limits go.

Scarcity creates behavior.

It is often out-competed for dominance by other species.

If you could do it over again you would:

Do you need to have this screen shot?

Should I have a second image of my picture?

Did you want to save this file?

Today everybody is not asking for anything.

They save everything.

Once you have saved all the items…

Nothing feels important.

Memories are never lost, unlike a picture which can be clutter.

The most apparent example.

A year ago, the idea of taking photos was linked with friction.Having to do with the friction of years gone by.

There were some moments you missed out on.

You've read them at some time in the future.

You remembered them.

Making it easy – now phones.

So people store:

This is a picture that is taken 14 times. This is a photo that is to be taken 14 times!

Photographs that were accidentally taken out of focus and/or blurry.

Random screenshots of products which they did not buy.

Memes that are no longer remembered after 2 days.

Thousands of images.

Very little meaning.

They don't have too many pictures; that's not the problem.

The amount of filtering is not enough.

Search replaced Organization. The name was changed to Search replacing Organization.

In today's plants, intelligence is at work.

You can search:

“dog”

“receipt”

“beach”

“invoice”

May find something right away.

The ease is a change in behaviour.

Few people started organising thinking that they would be able to search later in the day.

Sometimes it does.

But not always.

You were saving it for in the first place especially if you don't remember what you saved it.

The Screenshot Economy

Modern junk drawer equals screenshots.

Individuals put things away “for later”:

Recipes

Tweets

Addresses

Booking confirmations

Advice threads

Inspiration ideas

They are never used again for the most part.

But they remain.

Accumulating quietly.

Put storage in place to make it easy to hoard!

Digital Clutter is not a trivial issue, it can have a profound impact on the human mind.

Even if you don't see the clutter on a daily basis, it has an impact on you.

You feel it when:

Searching takes longer

Records are hidden.Important files are hidden.

It's difficult for you to maintain an orderly gallery.

Backups become confusing

Cleaning because it's too difficult to do is not an acceptable reason.

This is not just a 'how' or 'technical' issue.

It’s cognitive.

Mess creates resistance.

Even digital mess.

Unlimited Storage does not leave individuals to decide on the spur of the moment, it provides them time to decide.

People don't decide, they delay and delay.

They think:

I'll make up a list later.

I'll find a way of removing the duplicates later.

I will change the names of the files later on

I will tidy up folder at a later stage.

Later rarely comes.

Thus, digital life is a storehouse of deferred choices.

Why This is More than What it Seems

Disorganization takes many forms and many times takes a lot of time:

Copying a file, 1:11

Takes a picture of a previously captured photo

Failure to have the required documents when they are needed in a pinch.

The process of downloading a file which has already been downloaded.

All minuts are small.

Repeatedly, it's called "real friction.

The Real Problem Isn't Storage, But rather the Way We Use It.

Usefulness of storage.

The problem is when doing something is easier than purposeful.

Technology solved:

Lack of space

Backup anxiety

Device limitations

It couldn't be solved though:

Poor habits

Avoidance

Indecision

Information overload

Those stayed.

What Actually Helps

It's not necessary to go to the extremes of digital minimalism.

Light Maintenance is required.

Deletions can be done with the smallest batches. The removal of the smaller batches is most simple.

It is recommended to do 5 minutes each week.

Store High Value Items in Folders: High Value Items stored in Folders.

Only documents that count are:

IDs

Contracts

Tax files

Work assets

4. simply remove Screenshots.

Inspect/remove every week.

Organize, store and label photographs

Ten photos that are usedis better than 200 copies of that ten photos.

Change important files' names as soon as they are created.

It's easier to do it right now, than wait until you are grateful for it down the road.

The Bigger Insight

The new time-saving rules revolutionized the storage cost.

It didn't cut down the costs of maintenance.

This cost is still to be paid.

Later: Just.

Final Thought

They think that clutter is due to insufficient floor space.

But, surprisingly, this is not always the case: often times the opposite is true.

There is no pressure to make a choice when there's too much space.

Nothing changes if you don't select.

There was plenty of space, courtesy of the unlimited storage.

But not order.

This is two separate things.
