What's Wrong with Dandelions?

When you think about it, nothing

I was weeding in my garden and I had a super random thought: ADHDers have a lot in common with dandelions. (Buckle up. This is going to seem random, but I promise it makes sense.)

Dandelions are widely considered a weed, and there is an entire industry built around that narrative. But why? Who decided?

The word "dandelion" means "tooth of a lion," because of the shape of their leaves, and there are so many AMAZING things about them. Did you know that you can eat EVERY part of this plant? Flowers, leaves, and roots? Each part has it's own nutritional and medicinal properties. Also, dandelions are one of the first foods available in the season to nourish bees and pollinators. They were only labelled a weed in the 20th century. Before that, they were considered a perennial.

Not to mention that dandelions are cheerful, bright, hardy, and sweet smelling. They are fun to play with when they go to seed, and they are so tough. I love seeing a determined little dandelion poking its way through a crack in the cement. To me, it is a symbol of resilience.

How you see dandelions is just a matter of perspective, and the same goes for how you see your ADHD.

Just like dandelions, if ADHD isn't carefully managed things can get out of control, but if the right tools are in place, there are a lot of gifts to unlock.

Some may look at ADHD and see hyperactivity, stubbornness, moodiness, impulsiveness, and flakiness. Others may look at ADHD and see energy, persistence, sensitivity, honesty, and creativity.

There's a whole range of perspectives and interpretations and you can see it in people's reactions to hearing about your diagnosis. From, "Oh I'm so sorry to hear that" to "That's so exciting! Congratulations!". It's all a matter of perspective.

The good news is, you get to decide. How you see your ADHD is a choice.

So my friend, is your ADHD a weed? Or a cheerful flower pushing through the concrete?

Other Fun Facts About Dandelions:

The roots of the dandelion can be roasted to make a caffeine-free coffee.

Some cultures see the dandelion as the only flower that represents the three celestial bodies. The yellow bloom is the sun, the white ball of seeds is the moon and when the seeds are released into the air, they are shooting stars.

A single dandelion plant can live for up to 13 years if left alone.

Dandelions were prescribed for a lot of ailments. The reason it was such a successful catch-all remedy was because a lot of people were vitamin deficient.

Dandelions are actually good for your lawn. They help aerate it.

The leaves can already be found in most grocery stores in containers of mixed greens. Harvested when they are young, before the dandelion flowers, the leaves are quite sweet. They are bitter if they are harvested later.

The markup for a bundle of dandelions at the grocery store is insane! If you choose to harvest them yourself, make sure no one has used pesticides to try and get rid of them at any point. Be safe, have fun, and enjoy!
