Mostly associated with sports, trading cards are an amazing category of collectibles. These are available in wide varieties, people enjoy collecting them and there are some non-sports cards such as the Pokemon ones, that children especially play enthusiastically. These non-sporting trading cards feature characters from the cartoon, comic books, television series, and film stills. Trading cards gained fame in the 1990s and further, they emerged as a separate category, collectible card games. These games are frequently based on fantasized gameplay. Fantasy art cards are a subgenre of trading cards that focus on the artwork. Magic: The Gathering, is the most successful game with the highest number of unique cards.

Stages of Development of Trading Cards

Baseball was the first sport to become professionalized widely, the baseball cards were the first ones to be placed in the developmental stage of sports cards during the 19th century. In the early 20th century, hockey cards began to appear in the category. Cards that developed in this period are commonly known as cigarette cards or tobacco cards because their production took place in the tobacco companies and were inserted into cigarette packages, with an aim to stiffen the packaging and advertise the cigarette brands. The most expensive card on the hobby is a cigarette card of Honus Wagner from a set named 1909 T-206. It is said that Wagner was against cards being inserted into cigarette boxes because it is something that would harm children. Thus, the production of his cards stopped abruptly. It is further estimated that less than 100 of Warner’s cards exist in this set. His card set was sold for a value as high as $2.8 million!

The production of sports cards rose in the 1980s and collectors started preserving their cards more sincerely because they became aware of their potential investment value. This trend went to the 1990s as well. Due to this, cards started to be manufactured in greater numbers to hold back their rising values.

By the late 1990s, card companies reduced the production of these cards to keep the collectors interested. Collecting “game-used memorabilia” is the latest trend in the hobby. It features a piece of a player’s jersey that was worn by them during a professional game. Other memorabilia cards include pieces of bats, balls, helmets, hats, and floors. Authenticated autographs are also popular and are manufactured in much smaller numbers than the regular base set cards.

The most collected baseball cards in the hobby’s history are the autographs obtained by the card manufacturers!
