Have you ever wondered how many cables are around you working silently for your benefit? Take a look around you and count the number of cables in the room that surrounds you. These are indeed the unsung heroes, whose absence will make our life lose energy and light. The significance of cables and connectors is certainly hidden (or layered with the walls), but nonetheless. They exist. We generally don’t look at them with the purpose of admiring their contribution to our convenient lives, it serves us in many of our daily requirements. Our homes are connected with various wires to get data signals, electricity, networks, etc. The offices, hospitals, and even the amusement parks are all wired with a long span of cables that allow your schedule to exist and be followed successfully.

The thought about the existence of cables crosses your mind only when there’s a need to buy one. When you step into the store, you might be overwhelmed by looking at the tremendous variety of cables and connectors available for you to choose from. For a layman, it might seem difficult to choose the correct cables and connectors. All of them are made with one or more wires which are wrapped in insulation and are terminated by a metal connector on the ends.

When looking for the appropriate cable, three elements must be considered: electrons, voltage & current; shielding, and impedance.

Electrons, Voltage, and Current

Electrons move through the conductors, if a wire is connected with the two ends of a battery, the flow of electrons will take place effectively. This electronic movement has numerous characteristics; the two major ones are voltage & current. Voltage is the term to describe the pressure exerted during the flow of electrons, and current is the rate of the flow of electrons.

Resistance is another term, it is the ability of a material to restrict the electrons from moving freely. Metal wires are good conductors, they are used in cables because they have a large surface volume which is crucial for electrons because it helps the electrons to travel easily over the surface of wires.

Shielding

A shield acts as a conductive material that is responsible for absorbing signals that are produced externally. The electric and magnetic interference is prevented through these shields.

Impedance

If the impedance fails to match between signal source, cable, and receiving component, the waves will collide and be expelled from the phase. This will result in the reflection of a few signal power back to the source, causing noise and loss in signal.

You must use cables as per their application, for example, use a video cable for video only, and the audio one for audio. The length of the cable should be appropriate to your requirements. Buying excessively long cables will be prone to more exposure which may, in turn, result in potential failure. Also, choose cables that are flexible for portable needs, and for permanent installations, get rigid ones.
