If you thought that the price of rent in 2021 was bad, 2022 may have us digging a lot deeper into our pockets than ever before. But if you’re tired of being financially stretched and you’re looking for better value, and higher savings, you might be pleasantly surprised to find that some two bedroom apartments to rent are actually cheaper than one bedroom apartments in certain cities.

If you’re intrigued about getting more bang for your buck, we look at the 4 cities offering better deals on two bedroom apartments compared to typical one bedroom units.

Why are Two Bedroom Apartments Cheaper than One Bedroom Apartments to Rent?

In 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic first struck, little did we know that our lives would be completely turned upside down. Businesses suffered during lockdown with many unable to stay afloat while others had to reinvent and rethink their operations. This led to thousands of layoffs and placing staff on short-time.

As job security became scarce, more people soon realized that they could no longer keep up with the cost of living including mortgage repayments and high-priced rentals. This led to a sudden demand for one-bedroom apartments which elevated the costs of these single units. Unfortunately, this has caused a headache for landlords who are now finding that their two-bedroom apartments are vacant while one-bedroom units continue to fill up. The result? Better prices on rent for two-bedroom apartments.

Which Cities Offer the Best Prices for Two Bedroom Apartments to Rent?

1. California

In California, you’ll find the city of Fresno where most two-bedroom apartments are competing with the monthly rental costs of a one-bedroom apartment. If you love nature, then moving to the city will be your dream come true. Nestled in the Californian county are the Yosemite National Park and many trails including waterfalls that any outdoor enthusiast will love.

You can expect to pay just over $1000 for a two-bedroom apartment in comparison to the $1100 you’ll be forking out for a single unit. Fresno is also known as having the lowest cost of living across the country.

2. Wisconsin

Greenbay is the home of the Neville Public Museum which depicts a wide range of historic and art pieces from the region and its surroundings. If you are looking for affordable housing, then Greenbay could be the right choice for your financial needs. It was voted as one of the most affordable owing to the average costs for rent when compared to the national average.

The one-bedroom apartment to rent is close to $1200 while a two-bedroom fetches just over $1010 per month.

3. Alabama

To take advantage of valuable rentals, you can check out Auburn in Alabama. The region boasts the Tuskegee National Forest and is home to the Auburn University where a variety of native plants discovered by Donald E. Davis Arboretum, is on display.

The cost of rent for a single bedroom apartment in Auburn is almost $1000 but you could find rentals of around $950 per month. This is compared to the monthly rent of a two bed unit of $800 per month.

4. Iowa

To take advantage of really low monthly rentals, you could look at Ames in Iowa. The region is a bustling community with many colleges specializing in design, engineering, and agriculture.

The two-bed apartment is around $680 per month compared to the $780 monthly rent that is required for a one-bedroom place to live.

Choosing the Right Rental

Moving to a new state can be a challenging process but if you weigh the pros and cons, you’ll find a place to complement your lifestyle and to help you save money every month.

While the above-mentioned cities all offer some good prices on renting a two-bedroomed apartment, other areas offering cost-effective rentals include Virginia, New York, and even Memphis Tennessee. Research and some careful planning can help you find the best home for your needs.
