What Are the Pros and Cons of Moving on Weekends Versus Weekdays?

If you’re getting ready to move home, you may have a lot on your mind. You’ve got to pack everything into boxes, clear out that cluttered garage and switch over all your utilities. You will need to book a removal service as well to make the task as easy as possible. But should you schedule all this activity for the weekend or opt for a weekday? Time to weigh up the pros and cons.

Stressful Event

Moving home can be stressful. In fact, one poll commissioned by an energy company found that adults in the UK ranked moving as one of their most stressful life events. It stands to reason, then, that you should do whatever you can to reduce that stress level, and your choice of moving day could play a critical role.

Why It May Be Better on a Weekday

  • To begin with, consider the cost element. Many people choose to move on a weekend because they have more time and are generally away from work. This drives up the cost, however, versus a weekday because generally, when demand is high and supply is low, prices usually rise.
  • You may be able to find people who will help you pack for less money.
  • With fewer people choosing weekdays to move, you might have a wider choice of moving companies.
  • If you want to make this seamless and move into your new home without any delay, you will need to coordinate your utility services with each company. They are more likely to be open on a weekday, so if you do have any problems, you can get in touch with the company right away.
  • If you live in a typical suburban neighbourhood, space may be at a premium. You will need to reserve some of that precious area around your house so that the moving truck can get as close to your property as possible. This may be easier on a weekday when many of your neighbours are at work.
  • If you do opt for a weekday, get started as early in the day as possible. By packing the moving truck early in the morning, your possessions can be transported to your new property without delay. If you plan this carefully, you’ll avoid any issues with rush-hour traffic that may otherwise slow you down. Remember that you have to unpack everything at the other end as well.

Why The Weekend May Be the Better Choice

There are downsides here as well, but the pros may make the weekend a more favourable time for moving.

  • If you do choose the weekend, you won’t have to take time off work.
  • You won’t have to pull your kids out of school, and they can be ready to move with you. Perhaps they can also help pack smaller objects.
  • Speaking of help, your friends may be able to assist as they are likely to be off work as well.
  • You won’t need to worry as much about traffic when you finally get on the road. This may be very important if you have quite a distance to go.

Best of Both Worlds?

Some people opt for the best of both worlds and plan to move on a Friday so that they have the weekend to settle in and gradually unpack.
