The Healing Power of Travel

How a Solo Trip Helped Me Overcome Anxiety

By Muhammad Shoaib Published 4 years ago • 3 min read

I have always been an anxious person. For as long as I can remember, I have struggled with feelings of worry and apprehension, especially when it comes to new experiences. As a result, I had always been hesitant to travel, fearing that it would exacerbate my anxiety. But one day, I decided to take a chance and embark on a solo trip. Little did I know that this trip would change my life forever.

I chose to go to Thailand, a country that had always fascinated me with its vibrant culture and stunning landscapes. I spent weeks planning my itinerary, researching everything from the best places to visit to the local customs and traditions. I was nervous, of course, but also excited to embark on this adventure.

From the moment I arrived in Thailand, I felt a sense of liberation that I had never experienced before. Everything was so different from what I was used to, from the exotic smells and sounds to the bustling streets and colorful markets. And yet, I felt a sense of calm that I had never experienced before. It was as if my anxiety had melted away, replaced by a sense of wonder and awe.

Over the course of my trip, I visited countless temples, explored hidden beaches, and tasted exotic foods. I met other travelers from all over the world, each with their own unique stories and experiences. I learned so much about myself and the world around me, gaining a newfound appreciation for the beauty and diversity of the world.

But what surprised me the most was how my anxiety had faded into the background. Of course, there were moments when I felt a bit nervous or overwhelmed, but these moments were fleeting. I was able to recognize my anxious thoughts and let them pass, instead focusing on the beauty and wonder of the present moment.

One of the things that helped me manage my anxiety while traveling was my daily yoga practice. I had always enjoyed yoga, but I had never been consistent with it before. During my trip, however, I made a commitment to practice yoga every morning, no matter where I was or how I was feeling. This helped me stay centered and focused, even when I was in unfamiliar surroundings.

Another thing that helped me was journaling. Every evening, I would sit down and reflect on my day, writing down my thoughts and feelings. This helped me process my experiences and gain a deeper understanding of myself.

When I returned home, I felt like a different person. My anxiety had not disappeared entirely, but it no longer controlled me in the way it once had. I felt more confident, more self-assured, and more at peace with myself and the world around me.

Looking back, I realize that my trip to Thailand was more than just a vacation. It was a journey of self-discovery, a chance to confront my fears and overcome my anxieties. And it was all thanks to the healing power of travel.

If you're struggling with anxiety or any other mental health issue, I encourage you to consider taking a solo trip. It doesn't have to be to a far-off destination like Thailand; even a weekend getaway to a nearby town can be a transformative experience. The key is to challenge yourself, to step outside of your comfort zone and embrace the unknown. You might be surprised at just how much you can learn about yourself and the world around you.

In fact, there is research that supports the idea that travel can have positive effects on mental health. A study published in the Journal of Travel Research found that travel can reduce stress, increase happiness, and improve overall well-being. Another study, published in the Journal of Positive Psychology, found that people who traveled tended to be happier and more satisfied with their lives than
