Testers for Power Supplies

What is the PSU Tester and How Can I Use It?

A basic Power Supply Tester is supplied in the box with some Seasonic Consumer power supplies to enable consumers easily check whether the power supply is operating properly.

What is the best way to check your power supply?

1. Turn off the power supply by turning the I/O switch on the rear panel to the “O” position for your safety.

2. Unplug the power supply's AC power cord.

3. Disconnect the power supply from all peripherals and devices.

4. Reconnect the AC power cord to the power supply and double-check that the AC power is coming from the wall outlet (do not use power strips, extension cables or splitters).

5. Before you begin testing, connect the motherboard cable's 18-pin and 10-pin connections to the power supply.

6. Connect the Power Supply Tester to the 24-pin motherboard connection at the end. The Tester has a notch that lines up with the notch on the 24-pin connection.

7. Make sure the power supply's fan control switch* is set to Normal Mode (S2FC). (The fan will not turn in Hybrid or Fanless Mode (S3FC).)

Set the I/O switch to the “I” position to turn on the power supply.

9. If you observe the power supply fan* whirling, it means your power supply is operational.

If your power supply does not have a cooling fan (PRIME Fanless Series) or does not have a fan control switch (FOCUS SGX Series), you may still test it using the same technique. After connecting your power supply to the motherboard in step 5, you can easily connect an external fan to it with a Molex connection. If the external fan begins to spin when the power supply is turned on, the power supply is operational.

It might be difficult to pinpoint the source of odd behaviour or unexpected crashes on your computer.

Testing your power source should be part of your troubleshooting, as much as you don't want to believe it's the issue—it might be on its way out. This guide will teach you how to do it.

Signs that your computer's power supply is failing

There are a few warning indications that your computer's power supply is deteriorating. Unfortunately, many of them are vague and might refer to a variety of issues.

Symptoms include:

1. Computers crash at random.

2. Blue screen crashes on a regular basis.

3. The PC case makes a lot of noise.

4. The failure of PC components on a regular basis.

5. Your computer won't turn on, although the fans in your case are spinning.

How to tell if your power supply is dead or alive?

It's a process of elimination while looking for a defective power source. The procedure isn't thorough, but it should give you a fair sense of whether or not your power supply is in excellent operating order.

Follow these instructions if you have tried software troubleshooting and suspect the problem is hardware. After each step, retest.

1. Check to see if any external switches on the power supply's back have been unintentionally switched off.

2. Verify that the power cord is securely connected to the wall socket and the computer's back.

3. Make sure neither the power cord nor the wall socket is dead.

4. Inspect all internal connections in your computer, including power connectors to peripherals.

5. Disconnect all peripherals and hardware from your computer except the boot drive and, if you don't have onboard graphics, the graphics card. Remove the graphics card as well if your CPU has built-in graphics.

6. Make sure you've completed Step 1 first. I've lost count of how many times the external on/off switch has been triggered by a vacuum or even a pet cat playing around behind the PC in my over a decade as a PC tech!
