Sewing Makes Me Happy

Creating Through The Years

Cushions for My 10 Grandsons

The craft of sewing’s brought “shear” joy to me!

From childhood days to beyond seventy,

I’ve been creating clothes, costumes, and more—

Cutting, stitching, picking threads from the floor!

I have lots of patterns bought through the years,

Now faded and wrinkled—with a few tears;

As I mix and match, I see in my mind

New ways of making things ‘one-of-a-kind’;

That’s one of the reasons why I create—

There’s no one else with like pieces I make!

As mom of four daughters, also two sons,

The busy years raising them now is done;

But I still get texts from each one of these—

With hints or a sketch to “sew for me, please!”

In a few days I’ve completed the task—

And mail off their wish—they know how to ask!!

Dresses for bridesmaids, flower-girls, the bride—

Many times over I’ve tailored with pride;

Pleased that they ask me to showcase their day

In dream bridal outfits, all on display!

It’s not just clothing I whip up these days—

More challenges comes in various ways!

I’m a lucky Gram of fifteen young souls

Whose every request, on my heartstrings pulls;

As none of them live very close to me—

Zoom keeps them nearby, so I get to see

Their smiles, their projects, and also how fast

They’re growing up; I know this stage won’t last;

They all know grandma thinks sewing’s a joy,

Stitching requests come from girl or from boy!

Now some of the clan share this same passion,

For crafts or designs of every new fashion.

I answer their questions, off ‘ring a hand,

Enabling wind-up of each task as planned.

Sometimes they surprise me with a new scheme,

But I love to help them with every dream!

Sharing the delight that fills them and me

When they achieve, is rewarding to see.

By DOING, I show them sewing is fun—

Creative cost-saving—rolled into one!

Recently I saw a contest online,

That asked, “who had been the mentor of mine,”

“Who taught me to sew?”—I gathered my thoughts

Sharing a few tales, then tied up the knots—

I quickly pressed “Send”, then to my surprise,

I won the contest and gained the grand prize—

A top-notch machine that’s useful to me

For design, then stitching embroidery!

Here’s a copy of the short poem I wrote—

Then I’ll sum this all up with a brief note.

"So, who taught me how to sew?

Well, it is so, sew long ago;

That it really seems to be—

Sewing’s become a part of me!

My mom sewed by necessity

But for me—it’s creativity!

Growing up I found this way

To express myself on any day;

I’d make my clothes or spend the time,

Sewing for friends or my siblings nine!

I continue to love the results I see

While creating outfits for my kids and me;

Be it mending or making a wedding dress,

I love each challenge—sewing’s not a stress;

Completing a project gives me satisfaction;

A new machine would be a great attraction

In my sewing room where my grandkids see,

What I’m creating now—easy as 1-2-3!"

Ongoing learning comes at my machine,

Mistakes have been made from which I can glean

Practical lessons to share and to show,

For any who ask or just want to know…

When making cushions, capris, or caftans,

Perhaps a fur coat, a hat, or some fans;

Every tool of the trade is relevant,

And oft on this theme you will hear me rant!

Blunt scissors and needles are quite useless;

Keep notions on hand—it rids you of stress!

There’s no need to stop right there in mid-seam

If organized and prepared, it’s a dream!

Ten grandsons now hold the cushions above,

Monogramed and sewn in colors they love!

And for the grand-daughters at this same time,

I made them outfits which fitted just fine.

Measurement updates allow me to be

Ready to cut and start a sewing spree!

So I stitch along with patience and care—

It’s a joyful way my love to declare!
