Ceilings Same as Walls

Mostly people would not really think about painting their walls and ceiling with contrast colors, as that would really make the room look bold, crispy and sharp. If your ceilings match the color of your walls, it will make your room look more warm and cozy, at the same time giving it a more homey feeling. It is advisable to paint the rooms with lower ceilings and less surface area with the same color as the walls. These may include your staircase, bathrooms and even closets.

Even if your ceilings are higher, then too you would be recommended to paint them the same color as your walls, because again, we want your rooms to look cozy. However, if you do not want to keep them the same color as your walls, then a lighter shade would work and go with it as well.

What Color to Choose for your Ceilings?

Many people make the mistake of keeping their ceilings pure white. Sure it looks decent, but then it makes it look bland and your ceiling appears more like a background than a roof. So if you want your room to have a better impact on anyone that enters it, then keep it the same shade as your walls or a lighter shade.

If you are still not able to make up your mind on what color to go with, then this is the time you need to catch up with a consultant. Explain to them what kind of texture or what kind of an effect you are looking for, and surely they are going to walk you through it. If you opt for a dark color that matches your walls, it will make your room look a little smaller but cozy at the same time.

A lighter shade makes your room look brighter and bigger. Now that you know how the different colors may affect your room, you are free to make your choice, however you want your room to appear. Plus it will automatically be easier for you to make your choice once you know how exactly you want your room to look like.

How to Paint Your Ceiling

After selecting your color, you have the task of getting the ceiling done. You can either choose a professional painter for it, or you can choose to do it yourself as well. Here are a few tips to remember if you opt for the latter.

1. There are chances that there might be a few stains on your ceiling due roof leaks, or overflowing skills. In order to cover up those ugly stains, use a stain-blocking primer and apply a coat on all the marks you spot. You can even go for spray cans of pigmented shellac but then it is easier if you just stick to the brush.

2. Sand your ceiling before painting. There are possibilities that your ceiling may have some bumps; they get stuck to your ceiling over time. So the best way to start with your untextured ceiling is to do a quick once-over sanding with a 100 grit drywall sandpaper. This will ensure that your ceiling is smooth and ready to be painted.

3. Go over the edges of your ceiling with the paintbrush first, covering a nice thick layer of it with the paint. That will mark your boundary that you cannot exceed while painting so that you do not get the color on your walls.

4. When you get to the roller part, make sure you first divide your ceiling into sections of about 5 feet. Roll in both directions at a steady pace. Make your movements quick and go from one section to the other and paint along the edges as well. Make sure to roll in one direction only.

5. You do not require a very fancy, expensive or extravagant pole for your roller. You can use any simple wooden broom handle as well if you wish. They are cheaper and easy to find.

6. You need to work on your roller though. You might want your ceiling to get done in a short amount of time, that too with minimum spatters. For that you need the best roller cover there is available. The preferable option would be a 1/2-in.-nap lambswool cover. If you think that they are too expensive, then keep in mind that they are easy to clean and will last longer than any other roller you can think of, given that you take good care of them.

7. If your ceiling is a textured one, then see that you are gentle with the rolling. If the texture has already been painted, then it is safe to paint over it again. However, if it is not, then there are chances that the water in the fresh paint can cause the texture to loosen up. Thus ensure to not go over the paint again and again. Leave it after you have rolled it once.

8. You also need to ensure that while painting your ceiling, you do not get paint on yourself as it could be a little troublesome to get rid of it. Hence use safety glasses and baseball caps. Wear gloves. To make your skin clean up quicker, rub some lotion on it.
