Even though a complete home renovation can drag and be stressful, don’t let that stop you from creating a home of your dreams. All you need to do to make your renovation less traumatic for you, your family, and your contractors is to be well-organized. If you create a good work plan, you will save money, time, and your nerves, and here’s how you can do it.

Have a visual representation of your remodel.

No matter how amateurish or professional your architectural plan looks like, it’s a great idea to have a visual representation of how you want your home to look like after the remodel. It’s much cheaper and easier to modify your plan on the paper than to demolish a wall. Having a good plan will also help you manage your budget and expenses much better. You will also see what parts of the project you can DIY and which parts you need professionals to do. This is also a good time to find reliable contractors and a few helping hands, as well as to apply for all the necessary permits.

Set priorities.

Large projects, such as roof replacement and repair, foundation maintenance, siding repairs, and window replacements should be done first. Smaller projects can be set aside for later because they usually depend on the larger ones. The first thing you should check up and fix is structural problems and roofing. Repair weakened walls and carrying beams. You should also repair or even replace damaged windows that will not only affect the final look of your home but also your home’s energy efficiency. Your siding should also be dealt with early into your remodel if it’s damaged. If it only needs a fresh coat of paint, you can leave it for later.

Structural Carpentry

After you have resolved the priority repairs, move on to the next step and take care of your structural carpentry, such as drywalls, doors, and walls. If you feel there is a need to introduce some bigger changes, move and remove existing walls or construct new ones. You should also consider adding more beams to better support weight of the story and the roof. If you need to add extra doors or seal the existing openings, this is a good time to undertake that project.

Electrical and Plumbing Work

While your walls, floors, and ceiling are being reconstructed, use this opportunity to contact your HVAC provider to take care of your ducts for heating and air conditioning. This is also the perfect time to install new electrical and plumbing systems or repair your existing one. You don’t want to skip this step or leave it for later. It will only cost you extra money and time, and destroy your hard work.

Interior Finishes

One of the last things to do during your remodel should be finishes and decorative details. Paint the interior walls, hang wallpapers, paint molding, and rearrange the furniture and decorative details. Experts in home remodeling advise us to leave the floor installation for the last stage of the renovation process to save your floors from wear and tear and have them looking shiny and new.

Finish with outdoor remodeling.

With the house mostly finished, it is safe to put on the siding and a fresh coat of paint. You do not want to do this earlier if not necessary because doors and windows may get damaged and spotted with paint. This is also a good time to devote to your landscaping, garden, and backyard. If your garden shed or swimming pool also needs a little touch-up, give it a fresh coat of paint and do some maintenance work. Grab some swimming pool paint and fix all broken or chipped tiles. There’s also a good possibility that your home remodel will leave a mark on your garden and your lawn, so beautify it with flowers and greenery. Even though the exterior is the last thing on your remodeling list, it’s the first thing people see when visiting your home, so don’t neglect it.

If you follow these steps and make a good renovation plan, your remodel will pass without any stress and wasted time and money. Create your dream home and enjoy it for many years to come.
