Lampshades
Important furnishing accessories, lampshades not only reduce the glow from artificial light sources, but also direct and colour the light in a room.
Making your own lampshades to harmonize with the style of individual rooms is a rewarding task, since you can design shades specifically to match the colours, and complement the décor in each room.
Fabric lampshades can be made from a variety of different materials, including offcuts from the main soft furnishings in a room.
Choosing a Style
Although they are often considered to be peripheral accessories, lampshades can play a key role in a decorative scheme.
The size and shape of a lampshade are important design considerations; a shade will look best when it is proportion to the lamp base, and in style with the room. The colour and texture of the material used for the shade will directly affect the appearance of the lampshade and the quality of the light.
A translucent cover of silk, lightweight cotton, or paper, casts a soft glow of light, whereas dark card or completely opaque fabric directs the light above and below the lampshade.
Small and Elegant
Small card lampshades care versatile and easy to assemble. To increase their decorative impact, you can add stenciled designs, or apply simple lines of colour, around their top and bottom circumferences.
There are special frames available for making small, neat candle shades. These look ideal grouped on a chandelier, or placed on candlestick lamp bases.
Modern and Practical
At a table, where you will most probably need a overhead-illumination, a coolie semi-translucent shade or a thick durable card, all-in-all these are the types of material you will need for this interior. If you need to raise and lower the light source, use and adjustable fitting.
Sophisticated Pleats
Making pleated lampshades allows you to experiment with a range of plain or patterned papers. It is easy to create shades in all shapes and sizes, from straight-sided drums, to heavily graduated cones, to suit the style of a room.
Characterful Shapes
When used on lampshades, knife-pleats bring out the texture of the fabric and the shape of the shade. A popular style for tall lamp bases. These pleated sophisticated lampshades produce a gentle glow that is ideal for bedrooms.
Ornamental Trimmings
Pleated lampshades are popular choices for ceramic lamp bases as well as for pendant fittings. You can use a length of ribbon to gather and hold the pleats around the ring to the required shape, and to act as a decorative accessory.
Formal Effects
You can use almost any kind of lightweight to medium-weight furnishing fabric for lampshade covers. It is always beneficial, however, to choose a style of fabric that works well with the surrounding furnishings.
Amid desk clutter and against richly coloured curtains, a plain fabric lampshade in pale cotton will serve as a discreet and efficient means of directing light over a work area. The lining fabric should meet your lighting needs.
White silk tends to reflect the light outwards from within the frame; translucent cotton diffuses a warm glow from the center of the lampshade.
Slim and Tubular
Craft card or heavyweight paper is the perfect medium for unorthodox shapes of lampshades. Here, length of card has been cut and secured to two small rings, forming a tube that makes a visually striking lampshade when set on a tall, candlestick lamp base.
Efficient and Modern
If you need a light source that will cast a good light over a seating area, use a coolie-shaped lampshade. The broad circumference of the lampshade base is designed for dispersing a pool of light over a wide surface area.
