While there's no way to experience all that Melbourne City has to offer in a 48 hour period, it is possible to hit some of the main highlights during a weekend. Travellers visiting Melbourne will find that the best points of interest in the city really depend on one's preference although there are some iconic recreational hotspots and landmarks every tourist must visit. Here's an itinerary for those who wish to make the most of a weekend holiday in the Victorian capital.

Stay at a Convenient Base

Tourists who have only 48 hours to enjoy Melbourne's top highlights and activity bases must first ensure that the base they choose for the holiday is a centrally located one. Whether one chooses to stay at the Avani Melbourne Box Hill Residences or any similar Box Hill hotel or a business hotel in the CBD, there's no denying the advantages of a central base. In addition to allowing visitors easy access to some of Melbourne's most popular attractions and leisure hubs, staying at a strategic base also lets travellers make the most of the time available on vacation. Those who are unable to find a well-situated rest should instead aim to find one that's located close to a tram or metro station.

Saturday - Morning Hours

The best way to kick off a weekend in Melbourne is to have breakfast at one of the city's top cafes. Head over to Elizabeth Street's Seedling Cafe for a hearty breakfast of avocado toast or any other meal that strikes one's fancy and enjoy a morning stroll along Yarra River. With captivating views of Melbourne's CBD at every turn, this is the perfect way to start the day in the city. Join an Art Deco Walk tour group to uncover the architecture of the CBD and its art-deco buildings before doing some shopping in the trendy boutiques on Bourke Street. If there's time to spare before lunch, visitors can pop by Flinders Street Station and nearby Federation Square where some of the best eateries and outdoor entertainment venues are found.

Saturday - Afternoon & Evening

After lunch at one's hotel or a Federation Square restaurant, it's then time to tour the illustrious National Gallery of Victoria before popping over to the Queen Street Market for a shopping spree. Offering some of the best souvenirs and local delicacies in town, this historical bazaar is the perfect pit stop that tourists can make before travelling to the bustling Southbank area for dinner. The Spice Temple is considered one of the best restaurants in the area, especially for those who love Chinese cuisine. Moreover, it is conveniently located near the Old Railroad Bridge, which offers some of the most spectacular views of the city skyline at night.

Sunday - Morning Hours

Drive over to Degraves Street first thing to grab breakfast in some of the laneways' finest cafes and eateries. The narrow street lined with cafes is the ideal location for the first meal of the day, in no small part due to venues such as the Cathedral Arcade and the RMB Cafe. After breakfast, visitors can walk around admiring the street art of the Melbourne Laneways, which not only covers the length of AC/DC Lane and Hosier Lane but also Higson Lane.

Sunday - Afternoon & Evening

The last afternoon in Melbourne is the best time to drop by the MCG or Melbourne Cricket Grounds, where iconic games and World Cup cricket finals have taken centre stage. Don't forget to tour the MCG Museum before walking to the nearby Royal Botanical Gardens Victoria. Just a stone's throw away from the MCG, this picturesque green space is a wonderful place to enjoy a picnic or simply relax among the blooms before heading out to Pink Lake to take one last look at Melbourne before it's time to head to the airport.
