Snorkelling is such a fun activity to master, especially if one loves the sea and marine life. Get these steps perfected to start snorkelling like a pro.

Do the preparation

It is important to prepare beforehand, particularly if you are going on vacation. If your swimming is not at its best go for some basic swimming lessons. If you are already a good swimmer, it won't hurt to sharpen your current skills. Freestyle is what is required to master when it comes to snorkelling. On the plus side, if you are a strong swimmer, you can opt out of a swimming jacket. The vest is there to help you float better, but it can limit your coordination when in water.

Practice

Even if you are a good swimmer, snorkelling is at a different level. Swimming with fins takes some getting used to. The fins cause excess weight and resistance that can stress your muscles without preparation. So, to limit any cramps it is best to start training at a local pool or beach.

Breath-hold

When you begin practising, try to develop your breath-hold. Most beginner-level snorkelers stay at the surface and breathe through the snorkel. However, if you want to dive deeper into some circumstances this might come in handy. Diving deeper always means you will be able to experience the underwater world better. A few essential tips for underwater snorkelling is to relax and get your breathing into a relaxed state. Then take a few deep controlled breaths by breathing in strongly and slowly. When you are set for the dive bend at 90 degrees from the waist, so that trunk is completely upright and immersed in the water. Then elevate your legs so they too would stand vertical but above the water. The weight of the legs will assist you to move into the depths of the water. As the fins touch the water apply them to help you go further into the sea. If all this appears confusing it means you need to practice a bit more! So, try looking up any snorkelling club or classes for a few lessons before your next trip!

Preserve air

When snorkelling you have to be calm and breathe deeply and slowly. Breathing into a snorkel can be quite hard for a newbie as it is a different skill altogether. Deep breaths will help you to relax into breathing through the snorkel. It will also serve to maintain the heart rate at a low pace. This in turn makes you more relaxed and thus preserve your energy.

Tips to follow when you go on holiday

Despite the destination make sure to have a qualified guide at hand. Especially if you plan on underwater snorkelling. You may not be accustomed to the tides and seasonal changes, so have someone nearby. When renting equipment guarantee they are from authorised suppliers and check its condition before snorkelling. Ideally, it will be under the direction of the guide. When in the water, make sure to hear through to the guide’s advice. Do not go anywhere alone without informing them first! For beginners select a location with good visibility to get suited to the entire experience. Last but not least, use a suitable waterproof environmentally sound sunscreen, because you will burn but not be conscious of it.
